Welcome to Centercourt

In late December of 2007, I discovered the Buffalo News blog, Prep Talk, a blog devoted to high school sports in WNY.   At first, I would just check it out periodically by following a link that promoted it after reading a high school sports article online.  It wasn't  long before I was leaving the page up and clicking the refresh button to see if a new comment was left.

During the first week of January, I decided to chime in on the discussion.  I wanted to use a catchy basketball moniker, so I went with "centercourt".  While I consistently look for a good seat in the middle of the gym, I chose centercourt because during Buffalo State week I'm always in the same front row seat, right where the center court line ends.

Not long after leaving my first Prep Talk comment, some guy calling himself "hoopster" responded to me.  From that point on, I was hooked.  Prep Talk stays on all day, the refresh button gets a workout, and after games, I head to the computer to see what the rest of the Prep Talk Nation is talking about.

Keith McShea is the best in the business and because of him, Prep Talk developed a serious following.  Over time, McShea has added features to his blog such as online polls, iphone video from key moments, live chats, live chat coverage of championship games, and PrepTalkTV.  Because of all these features, coupled with his journalistic pedigree, Prep Talk will and should always be the king of online high school sports coverage in WNY.

Unfortunately, because of inappropriate and offensive comments left anonymously, the Buffalo News changed its web site policy to require all who comment to register in advance of commenting.  Even more unfortunate is that Prep Talk is by and large a victim of comments left outside of the Prep Talk Nation.  "I'm proud to say that while we've had hiccups here and there, the majority of commenting by Prep Talk Nation has been productive as we've tried to cultivate a responsible online high school sports community here" McShea wrote on his blog in August.  The resulting change has been a noticeable decline in reader comments, analysis, debates, banter, and general participation that helped Prep Talk to surpass three million hits.

So now with basketball season quickly approaching, I felt the time was right to re-establish a forum of reader comments similar to the one fans, parents, players, coaches, etc., had grown accustomed to.  Here, you will see recent comments and be taken directly to them by clicking on them.  You can post a comment using your real name or a moniker, simply by leaving an email address.  Comments will be posted immediately, without being screened first.  However, any comment I deem inappropriate, vulgar, or offensive will be removed.

I encourage all of you to continue visiting the Prep Talk blog and if you haven't already done so, registering and leaving comments.  I look forward to a winter full of high school hoops talk and hope everyone feels compelled to participate on some level.  I'll see you at the games, where I'll be sitting…

Ok… this is cool. It’s almost time for the regular season to start. We are always looking for fans to see my new school, the Tapestry Thunderhawks. Our early schedule:
    Dec 4-5 Niagara Catholic Tourney
Dec 7 @ Grand Island (and jellydonut)
    Dec 10 @ Nichols
Dec 17 Seneca (first home game in our new gym)
We are at Delaware and Great Arrow, right behind the Marshall’s Plaza.

I think this might be nirvana. And MIG we’re gonna be pretty good this year, thanks to a good returning class and excellent use of frequent flyer miles and international phone minutes. 🙂 First scrimmage tomorrow @KEast.

Being new to the prep talk, I was very worried when I started looking at the posts on the Prep Talk during the football season and saw that Milt was really the only one posting. Centercourt, good work as I was worried that the same would take place during the basketball season!!

Good to see you back, and good to hear you’ll be attending some of our games. One thing though: why would you wish the NF job on me? I’d rather manage the Yankees. At least there you can lose 60 games and have a good year. I kind of like being the engineer of The Little Engine That Could…

5:33am? Earl how do you get up so early on a Saturday! Yes will be interesting to c u at that new school. Still would love 2 hear why exactly u r not at Grover….likely player of the year and a good shot 2 win the Section! Also, Center Court, until u get Hoopster on this blog it is not complete!

    MIG..
If you were getting as much money to stay home as to go to work and have your health care paid for 95% for the rest of your life, what would you do? It was never about just hoops for me, I loved my time there but it was time to do something else ( plus a HUGE retirement bonus didn’t hurt either). My successor, Shaun Ryan, is an excellent coach who will do a great job. I’ll be rooting for them every regular season game but Jan. 13 (Tapestry at Grover).

Center Court are u alive? Keith would never go 3 days without posting. By they way until u hire a video girl that looks like Keith’s this blog will never b complete!

St Joes recruited a player from Africa, so what will Nichols do to trump that??

  24. jackherlan Avatar
    jackherlan

Nah, we didn’t recruit him from Africa, we looked at all the rosters from all the teams we have played over the last two years and then offered the best players $20 grand plus tuition to come to St. Joes. OK, maybe not.

  25. Hoops are #1 Avatar
    Hoops are #1

Ha, hey say they dont recruit but I have parents of middle school parents telling me all the time that the private schools are recruiting any good players in middle school. I will never believe the private schools dont recruit. Ask the parents of the kids at the private schools they will tell you. Dont let them in the section.

  26. McShea is God Avatar
    McShea is God

Who is recruiting and who isn’t…I love it! Center Court 4 once I am going 2 b serious. How about a post with the Al Pastor games for next week cause I have no clue who is playing. The only thing I know 4 sure is I won’t have 2 pay 2 get in and that the pizza will b cold and horrible.

  27. Earl Schunk Avatar
    Earl Schunk

As for the recruiting thing… All private schools have to recruit kids. They
have no feeder schools. My issue is with kids who are 10, 11 or 12 graders who appear at a school magically and happen to be athletes. I think this happens more in football these days than hoops. I wonder how many non-athletes transfer schools annually… My feeling has always been that the sports teams are perks for the people that go to the school, I don’t care to or want to recruit. To be honest, I don’t think most of the Catholic schools do either.

This event should b cancelled. No games should b allowed 2 b played until the AL Pastor starts. Center Court when does ‘War and Peace’ come out? Otherwise known as your season preview! Who is the early Top 5? Jamestown, W South, Joe’s, Falls, Clarence, Canisius…wait that is 6. Grover, Olean, Middle College, Clev Hill, Wilson Small schools?
Also I hear from a source ‘Hoopster’ will debut here when he get’s back from being ‘Hawaii Hoopser’!

MIG, Newfane is the team to beat in the N-O and I’m sure CC will give us much more info on them very soon. Thanks for the CCA info. I’ll be there scouting.

  31. Sec6Fan Avatar

JellyDonut or CC, In reference to the Newfane team, I heard that they had a coaching change and that it a young teacher that bumped Coach Fuller out, any truth to this statement? If so coaching could be a concern for the team with a 1st year young coach.

  32. centercourt Avatar
    centercourt

    Sec6Fan –
It is correct that there was a coaching change at Newfane, however it wasn’t a “bump”. The new coach is Eric Klumpp, who has been the JV coach at Newfane for a few years and worked closely with Scott Fuller. Fuller, who enjoyed much success during his tenure, is retired and had planned on being done after last season. Klumpp is a young PE teacher at the school.
As far as first year concerns, I have none for Newfane from a coaching aspect. Klumpp has been outstanding with the JV team and has much to do with the recent success at Newfane. If anything, I think you can look forward to better things in the future.

    1st Team:
    Bathurst- Close second in POY
    Williams- Carried team entire year
    J. Lewis- Picked up team when Tyson was not 100% or out
Trueheart- Best player on CHS this year. Dominated paint and rebounded to get break going, scored with very few touches in the offense
    2nd Team:
    Funk
    Taplin
    Eckstrom
    Lee-Yaw
    B. Brown
    3rd Team:

My one disclaimer is that I don’t see very much Southern Tier or N-O games, so I don’t see very many of the small school kids.
