Yesterday, one of the tournament officials from the Cataract City Classic told me he was disappointed because due to budget restrictions, they weren't able to get any marquee state powers in for the two-day event.   Well from my experience at this event, there has never been a better collection of games put together.  Five of the nine games were decided in the final seconds, and only one of the nine games was a double-digit win.

Alright, things didn't exactly get off to a roaring start with the first game that Lancaster won over Niagara Wheatfield, 43-34.  The first quarter was almost unwatchable, with the teams tied at three after eight minutes.  It wasn't some defensive clinic going on out there, and a half court shooting competition would yield more buckets.  But the teams did settle in and make a game out of it by the second half.   The Redskins were coming off an exciting win over Clarence so maybe they weren't as focused as they should have been.  One player who was focused the whole game was 5-7 senior Jake Kroll.  Kroll played with energy from start to finish (he accounted for his team's three points in the first quarter) and did a nice job keeping his teammates involved in the game.  Jack Mulcahy, just a sophomore, showed some good things for the Falcons, and the team was never lacking for effort.

St. Joe's wound up beating Depew going away, 45-27.  It was only a five point game at half and seemed like the chess match I had billed it to be.  But the Marauders opened the second half with a press and the defensive pressure led by Keith Louie, Steve Moser, and Chad Kelly, spurred a 10-0 run that opened the game up.

Niagara Falls beat Jamestown in WNY's first battle between two heavyweights this season, 62-54.  The Wolverines couldn't have started the Sal Constantino era any better.  Falls came out very fired up in front of its home crowd and matched its defensive intensity with a decisive and aggressive offense that led to a 38-19 lead at the half.  The Red Raiders adjusted in the second half and were able to get within four points, but the guard play by Falls was the difference down the stretch.  Game MVP, Taijay Williams, hit some timely 3's and JJ Wilkins was active late defensively, while Darin Butts and Jaysean Paige from Jamestown  were both held in check.

Day two began with the only overtime contest of the weekend, as Wilson edged St. Mary's, 61-59.  A good game throughout, it was the late stages that provided some big moments.  Tied at 52 with under two minutes to play, the Lakemen's Brennan Moxham and the Lancer's Jake Denz traded 3-pointers.  Following a Wilson turnover, Moxham dove on a loose ball to give his team possession, then got to the line and put his team back up by two.  As regulation expired, Nathan Meyers connected on an improbable shot to force the extra session.  In OT, Moxham scored the final four points, with the game winning bucket coming as the shot clock expired from just inside the three-point line, with under ten seconds remaining.

Amherst held a slim lead over Section V's CG Finney during much of the game, but a late surge by the Falcons gave them a 53-44 win.  Leading the game by a point half way through the final quarter, Amherst let the game get away from them during a decisive 14-2 run by the Falcons.  The Tigers did a good job defending Finney star Jamell Johnson, and he still finished with a game-high 25 points.

Williamsville North made an early season statement in gutting out a huge victory over Section V power Batavia, 56-53.  Freshman guard Sterling Taplin looked experienced beyond his years, drilling five second half 3-pointers, en route to a game-high 28 points.  The Blue Devils had the ball with a chance to tie in the final seconds, but the Spartan defense blanketed Batavia and did not allow a shot to get off.

In the Classic's best game from start to finish, Williamsville South knocked off Canisius, 68-67.  In a fast-paced, ultra intense game, the Billies came back from down ten to set up a thrilling back-and-forth finish.  With under two minutes to play, the Crusaders' Matt Hart hit a '3' to put his team up by two.  The Billies' Phil Hansen answered with a '3', only to have Hart come back and bury another, to restore the two-point lead.  So it was only fitting that Hansen provided the late-game heroics for South, by swishing a second straight 3-bomb (his third of the quarter) with under ten seconds left, to raise his team up to victory.

The weekend still hadn't seen a game-ending buzzer beater, so that's exactly what Niagara Catholic provided in defeating East Aurora, 55-53.  With the event's finale already pushed back an hour later than it was supposed to start, it looked like the Patriots and Blue Devils were heading to overtime, tied at 53.  Instead, it was freshman Jonathan Jackson who took an inbound pass, dribbled toward the lane, and pulled up to can a jumper and time expired for the stunning finish.

The host Wolverines overcame a rocky start to close out the Cataract City Classic with a bang, winning 47-44 over Aquinas of Section V.  Falls lacked the same intensity it sshowed early on against Jamestown, and quickly fell behind by double-digits in the early going.  The Little Irish maintained that lead for most of the first half, before a late push by the Wolverines closed the gap to 23-20 at halftime.  The game stayed close the rest of the way, but Aquinas seemed to always have a slight advantage.  With the game tied at 44 and less than a minute to play, Falls had possession.  After taking the shot clock all the way down, the Wolverines had a tough time getting a good look against the Little Irish defense.  With one tick left on the shot clock, sophomore Jermaine Crumpton elevated over his defender and let a 3-pointer fly, which connected in dramatic fashion.  Aquinas couldn't answer in the final seconds, and Niagara Falls celebrated its second big win in as many nights.

The Cataract City Classic Committee should be commended for putting together a first-class event  that exceeded all expectations.  Congratulations to Sal Constantino for beginning his career in style and helping to get people excited about Falls again.  Also, a shoutout to the Wolverine Pep Band for always makes the environment a special one at NFHS.

Thanks for the report! And many thanks for ignoring MIG’s advice. This stuff is over the top excellent and should not die on the vine!!! Much appreciated.
One question: How do the Falls’ players look this year? Excited? Having fun playing ball? Any dissension among the ranks? Guessing not, but since I wasn’t able to attend just wondering how they looked on the court.

Congrats to Sal and the Wolverines for their excellent start. It’s funny that when people are predicting a “down” year for WNY basketball this season, teams and players always seem to step up. If this weekend’s games are any indication, this promises to be an exciting season.

The biggest difference in watching Falls during its first two games was the attitude of the players. Each game provided different circumstances and the Falls players responded admirably to both.
Against Jamestown, they built an early lead and showed they could close, despite watching their lead nearly disappear entirely. The players didn’t gloat when they were up by 19 and didn’t panic or show any negative body language during the Red Raider run.
The Aquinas game showed me that this year’s version of the Wolverines has character. The team stuck together when the going got tough, and pulled out a total team effort against a very good opponent. The players seemed elated with their accomplishment and you got the sense they were playing for their coach and each other.
What makes this team a lot of fun is there isn’t one standout, but several. We can look forward to different players making the key contribution in different spots. Saturday night was a very special moment for Jermaine Crumpton.
To win Saturday at Canisius, they’ll need to continue playing the way they’ve started.

Thanks! Pretty much what I expected with Sal at the helm. He has a excellent way about him and can really relate to the kids.

Earl, all depends what you’re comparing it to. There are very few years where you have three state champions including a federation title. If that’s the standard then by definition almost any year by comparison will be a down one.
I agree with you though. Saturday was a classic example. Almost every game went down to the sire. Kids that weren’t big factors last year, Hansen, or were on JV, Hart, are stepping into the vacuum and seizing their opportunity to be a difference maker for their team. Always exciting to see a new generation, so to speak, of kids step into the limelight. And if the games on Friday and Saturday were any indication, this year will be exciting as any.

Yes, I agree with Hoopster! Please ignore MIG’s post. The site is terrific, and just what we need more of for WNY HS basketball. Keep doing what your doing. We all appreciate it.
I just want to mention that i love the play of the Canisius sophmores Weir, Macdonald and White. Playing way beyond their years with some significant minutes. The game hasn’t been to big for them so far.

First of all let’s not get too excited that Falls beat Jamestown by 8 at home. On a neutral court at Buff State that is an even game at least. And Aquinas last time I checked hasn’t won a Section title of ANY kind in basketball in a LONG LONG time so let’s not get too excited about Falls beating a football powerhouse by a few points at home. To suggest last years team was a mess unless you were part of it – watch what you say unless you can back it up with evidence. Guilo had that team in 2 State Finals in 4 of the years he coached. Sal scrapes by with a couple wins at home and all of a sudden he is the second coming of Pat Monti? Give me a break. Gulio won AT Canisius last year let’s see how the legend Sal does this week or if he can get this team to a State final like Gulio did 2 years in a row.
And Earl yes I think a ‘down’ year means, o I don’t know, less talented players, no State titles, maybe a Section 5 sweep in the Regionals, NOT that we’ve had some ‘good games’…wait, strike that – no chance of a Section 5 sweep with John Wooden, I mean Sal – coaching the Falls.

Didn’t mean to slight St. Mary’s, but they won a Class B Catholic State title last year. Some will argue that it comes with an asterisk since they only had to beat one team, but since they don’t play in section they won’t get any beef from me.
Espo you sound disgruntled. Not sure why other than you sound anti-Sal pro-Guilio, which is fine I suppose.
As for the falls, they had their worst year since the merger of LaSalle and the old High School. We can all argue about why, not as much talent, not disciplined, coaching, and on and on. For me they looked like a much different team as the year went on. There appeared to be a lack of interest and unity much of the time. Think they had the talent to win another sectional title, but was unable to pull it off. It happens all the time and it was bound to happen to the Falls.
Haven’t seen this year’s squad. I’m rooting for the kids and Sal. Would like to see the team back in its’ usual position among the very best in NYS. Sal is a passionate guy whose energy will translate well I believe. Time will tell of course. In the meantime I’ll be rooting for all involved.

HAHA finally what this blog needs! Some fights! Hoopster as always trying to ease everyone up. A good man indeed! I think Sal will do ok and it is better when that team is good. I won’t start my “Pat won 9 straight sectional titles and 3 State titles in 9 years with half the school” (but he did!)…I do think people are getting a BIT excited over beating a team from Section 5 that really has never had any b-ball success to speak of. I still put Falls behind W South and Canisius. Now if they win at Canisius this weekend THAT will b impressive and they will get my #1 vote. I will say Canisius by 5…somebody can text me updates as I will b laying on South Beach working on my tan! Love those NFL schedule makers for putting the Miami game in December (will skip the game 4 the Sunday bikini show at the Clevelander!)…anyway please keep the fighting going THAT makes these blogs interesting! I want to hear from Gulio!!!!!

    Espo…
If you’re so good at predicting, give me some LOTTO numbers. Guilio was in a no-win situation there. Unfortunately, the kids (probably with a lot of outside “advice”) stopped listening. When the goal is State title or nothing, that’s pretty unreasonable to expect from any group of kids, no matter how talented. The Falls was a victim of their own success. Sal is in a good situation right now, coming in after disappointment, plus he has a buy in with the kids.
As for the down year thing, there are no down years when you are dealing with kids. There were a large group of talented seniors last year, it’s time for new ones to step up. Last year everybody knew Nichols was going to be very good, this year’s great teams are yet to be discovered. As a wise coach once told me, “every team has its Jordan.” Similarly, every year has it’s best teams. To base great years on State titles alone ignores the great season had by many kids in those years. Let’s enjoy the year and see what happens.
