Someone locked Niagara Falls coach Sal Constantino in the locker room during halftime of the game at Canisius on Saturday. Giulio Colangelo was later spotted running down West Ferry Street.
Jerome Ross of Cleveland Hill entered the game against Tonawanda last week and promptly drilled a 3-pointer, which excited everyone watching. The reason the shot got such a response is because Ross would be undersized on most modified teams.
I enjoyed watching the Marauders' Reggie Agbeko and Grover's Kadeem Hillman battle for rebounds at St. Joe's on Monday. It's a pretty safe bet that those two get up higher than anyone else in WNY.
I mentioned this in my recap of Newfane's win against Roy-Hart, but it's worth repeating. Rohn Pierce, a first team all-league selection in the N-O last year, scored 29 of his 35 points in the first half. If you haven't heard of Pierce yet, you will more as the season goes on. He's a threat to score from anywhere on the floor, has great body control, and plays very aggressively. Pierce will attend Canisius College next year and play baseball.
Another thing from the Newfane/Roy-Hart game that was a first for me to see. The Rams' Tim Parks picked up his third personal foul with 6:21 left in the first quarter.
So far this season, size does matter. There have been seven games played this season between a top ten large school and a top ten small school. The large schools are 7-0 in those games. The next game of its kind will be Newfane (#5 small) against Williamsville North (#7 large) at the Jolly Boys Tournament December 28th.
I won't be saying Falls is back when I do my poll ballots next week. A two-point home win against Kenmore West is a lack of focus. Get the focus back, so I can say Falls is back. Here's the story from Ryan Nagelhout at the Niagara Gazette.
Jamestown (Class AA) beat Fredonia (Class B2), 106-25, in the first round of its United Way Tournament. I know teams want to play in the championship game of their tournaments and non-league games are tougher to schedule after losing two games overall. But noone expected that game to be close and an 81 point margin wastes a quarter of the non-league schedule for both teams. Maybe Bishop Timon-St. Jude could be an option for next season.
Whatever it is that happens in the rafters of the Canisius home games, it's pretty cool.
The way Marcus Feagin of Niagara Falls goes after rebounds and the explosiveness when he leaps, reminds me of Henry Mingo from Buffalo East in 2008-2009.
In the last Prep Talk live chat, a blogger referred to Batavia as being to Section V what Niagara Falls is to Section VI. I think calling them the Olean of Section V is a much more accurate comparison. Rochester doesn't have a Niagara Falls. Falls is a state power that has been to five Class AA state title games since 2004. Batavia has never played for a state title.
