Since last season, junior Kadeem Hillman has been throwing down signature dunks and flashing potential. On Thursday night against former head coach Earl Schunk's new team, Tapestry Charter, Hillman realized all that potential and then some, as he stole the show in leading his Presidents to an 88-64 win over the visiting Thunderhawks.
Hillman was an unstoppable force on his way to a career-high 28 points. After Tapestry took its only lead of the game at 2-0, Hillman scored the next two baskets of the game, with the second one being an emphatic two-handed slam, that set the tone for what would be his big coming out party. Hillman grabbed every rebound in his vicinity, swatted shots, altered countless others, showed some touch on jumpers, and crammed home four dunks, including a sweet alley-oop that was caught on video.
Head coach Shaunesy Ryan's I-Prep at Grover team lead by eight points after the first quarter and by nine at the break. Early in the third quarter after the teams had traded buckets, Chris Holland drilled a pair of 3-pointers that sandwiched a field goal from teammate Dartwon Brooks, to extend to a 56-39 lead. As the buzzer sounded to end the quarter, Holland canned another from beyond the arc to keep the Presidents in control of things.
The Thunderhawks got within 11 points early in the fourth, but a 17-4 run from Grover put the game away for good. At the end of that run was Hillman's highlight slam off a lob from Holland.
Tapestry was lead by Dazmond Knight, who scored a team-high 27 points with a combination of slashing drives and outside shooting. Daryl Hollins added 13 points for the Thunderhawks. Ahmad Richardson was strong on the glass, David Bass showed a nice feel for the game, and Jarrell Banks displayed a little of teammate Knight's quickness for Tapestry.
Maurice Cheatom scored 15 points for the Presidents, Holland ended up with 14, and Brooks finished with 11.
