Canisius and St. Joe's have been near mirror images of each other all season.  Before the two got together for the first time, they occupied spots four and five in the Buffalo News large school poll.  A Marauder win in that game  saw the two schools change places in the poll, and they've remained next to each other since.  They share six common nonleague opponents, with the same result for four of those games, and one (Falls) yet to be determined.  Both teams took apart the rest of the Monsignor Martin, including a resounding win over Bishop Timon-St. Jude for each.  The rivals are largely considered the class of the catholic league.  So it only seemed logical that after the rematch, we would have nothing sorted out, and the two would remain as they've been all season, even.

Aaron Nevins scored 11 of his 21 points in the final three minutes of the game and junior Matt Hart added 10 of his team-high 22 points in the final stanza, to lead the Crusaders in a huge fourth quarter in which they scored 32 points and overcame a five-point deficit.  Canisius registered an 82-78 victory to defeat its archrival, but most importantly, gained a share of first place in the league with a game remaining.  A Crusader win when they host Timon-St. Jude for their senior night on Friday, would earn them a first place tie for the regular season and force a coin toss scenario to determine the top seed for the Manhattan Cup playoffs.

The game, which sold out well before tip-off, was a dead heat after the first quarter, and a two-point game at halftime, with St. Joe's leading 31-29.  A Canisius run druring the first half of the third quarter had the Crusaders in front, 42-39, before a downright clinical display from Marauder Connor Rehbaum stole the show.  You could say he was heating up, feeling it, and in the zone, but however you describe it, Rehbaum was unstoppable during a late stretch in the third.  Scoring 13 of his game-high 24 points, the St. Joe's senior dribbled around, elevated over, and faded away from Canisius defenders, swishing everything that left his finger tips.  When he sank the final shot of the third from the corner, over a defenders outstretched hand, the place was on its feet and you wondered how the Crusaders were going to overcome that momentum.

The answer was by creating their own.  Canisius opened the fourth quarter on an 11-3 run and regained the lead, 61-58.  The lead would change four times over the next two minutes, before a St. Joe's basket from Steve Moser had the game knotted at 66 apiece.  On the ensuing possession, Nevins got to the free throw line and connected on both chances.  The senior floor general followed that up with a steal and score, before a basket from Hart had the Crusaders up by six, and they would never trail the rest of the way.  Just as the "Rowdies" had done in the previous meeting, the "Blue Crew" flooded onto the court at the final buzzer and swallowed up their team in celebration.

Gordon Lyons finished with 21 points for Canisius, while sophomore teammate Adam Weir added 10 points in the win.

The Marauders got 18 points from Moser and Reggie Agbeko netted 14 points.

Certainly one of the better games all season long.
Great effort and huge step-ups by Aaron Nevins, Matt Hart and Gordon Lyons. All had great games.
Connor Rehbaum couldn’t put a basketball through a barn for the majority of the first half, but showed why he’s a legit P.O.Y. candidate in the second half for sure.
Moser had 18 but in my opinion for THIS night, Joe’s did a little too much standing around and watching Rehbaum for a good part of the fourth quarter. They didn’t get the key grind plays from Kelly and Agbeko they typically get.
Reggie is an interesting player. At times tonight (and this season) he looks utterly unstoppable, while at others he’s ineffective for long stretches. I’m sure its a lack of experience.
Anyway, what a hell of a Manhattan Cup final we have in the making. Obviously its too early to annoint that finale before the playoffs, not when Timon on any given night is capable of outscoring any team out there, but it would take some major “weirdness” to happen for these squads to not meet a third time in a few weeks.

Saw a college hoops game tonight, so couldn’t be there for the battle for bragging rights between the two MMA powers. Really appreciate all the reports from PT extraordinaire Keith McShea as well as Pat’s recap. Looking forward to CC’s report even though I’ll be in travel mode tomorrow for another college hoops tilt. Hopefully we’ll see some additional commentary.
Congrats to the Crusaders! Enjoy it, as I’m not sure it is a harbinger of glad tidings in a couple weeks.
Looking forward to the private/public battle Friday night. Hopefully we’ll see another huge and boisterous crowd, not to mention another great game
And kudos once again to St. Joe’s for doing an excellent job scheduling.

I know their are a number of great rivalries in WNY, but this is one of the few where the game actually backs up the rivalry. Another classic last night, but that can be said for all the games between these two teams. Great players, making great plays, with great coaching, all under the best atmosphere in WNY HS basketball. Doesn’t get much better than that. Nice to see Canisius step-up and close one out in the 4th quarter. They have been close all year long against some of the best teams in this area and Rochester, so its nice to see them come together and close this one out. I think they needed that to reassure themselves that they can win these types of games. Again, great job by both teams. Hopefully we’ll get to see the rubber match.

Truly a great High School basketball game and well worth the the early arrival to assure a place to sit. Great performancs on both sides of the scorers table with Canisius answering St. Joe’s 4th quarter close out on Delaware Avenue a few weeks back.
Dead on analysis of the play of Hart, Nevins and Lyons, especially in the 4th quarter. As far as the 1st half goes, the barn was still under construction, and Rehbaum was in the trailer reading blueprints. Translation: two early fouls had him on the bench for nearly the entire second quarter with less than a handful of field goal attempts for the half.

  5. Patrick Moran Avatar

You’re preaching to the choir when it comes to Rehbaum. This is only my opinion, but he’s a first-team All-WNY lock and one of a tiny handful of players in the P.O.Y. race. He got off to a bit of a slow start this season but from the first game against Timon on he’s been just about as good as anyone.
That third quarter last night was amazing, he literally put Joe’s on his back and carried them for eight minutes, making all kinds of shots from everywhere.
One thing coach Simon and Herlan have to figure out is a way to “tame” Agbeko of sorts. He sat out more than half the first game vs. Canisius with big foul trouble and got into trouble again last night, in fact, I think he fouled out in last 2 minutes. Marauders are a much more intimidating team with him in the paint.
As far as Canisius goes, what happened last night is their formula to success going forward. Nevins will get to the hoop and free throw line because he’s aggressive and Lyons will score down low because he has a lot of great moves in the post, but if the Crusaders can get timely shooting from Hart and Wier they are going to be very hard to beat.
By the way, if they had an award for “Most Underrated Player” in WNY, Lyons might very well get my vote. He looks like Jane, but plays like Tarzan.

Gordon Lyons hands down is the and has been the best rebounder in the MMA for 2 years running. And yeah, he is very under appreciated.

KK, I wouldn’t say Gordon is under appreciated, but definitely underrated. I think everybody at Canisius (coaches, players & fans) appreciates the player that he is, and i’m sure after they’ve played against him the coaches on the other teams also appreciate the player he is. In my opinion MVP of the team, on a team with a lot of great players. Does not get the publicity of other players in the area, maybe because he is not cocky or flashy, just a great young man who brings it 100% every single night and can hurt you in a number of different ways. Had two guys come up to me last night and ask me who he was and what a great player he is. The more you see him play the more you realize that.

Mr. Greco, great kid to be sure, the definition of a “lunch bucket” type of player.

  9. Patrick Moran Avatar

I agree Mr. Greco, that’s why I said for my money, he’s the most underrated player in WNY.
To take it a step further, I think there are at least 2-3 teams in Msgr Martin where the most “known” player isn’t even the best player on his own team.

I so enjoyed reading centercourt’s write up of the events last night, but got extremely upset as I scrolled down through the comments. Why must we rate the Crusaders? Trust me…they don’t rate themselves. They see themselves as a team in every aspect. You talk about being “under appreciated”. Well guess what…I happen to know one of the kids extremely well, and from what he tells me, no one appreciates Gordon more than his team-mates. In my opinion, that team is full of MVPs. That’s what the players feel, and it’s that type of attitude that will take them to the cup.

  11. Patrick Moran Avatar

Queen. That’s excellent that they feel that way.. .they should.
Having said that, it’s every fan’s right to “rate” players— MVP, Overrated, Underrated, etc.
And in the case with media, it’s often our job.

Bottomline, if Rehbaum doesn’t miss the amount of time he did on the first half I would like to think Joe’s wins that game by atleast 5. Thoughts?

    Quenn,
i agree that this years version of the Crusaders are truly a “TEAM” in every meaning of the word, and this group of young men embody that spirit. Every player on that team this year has made a contribution and every night someone new steps up to make a difference. MVP (Most Valuable Person) is not rating any one player better then the next, it has nothing to do with skill level, points scored, rebounds, ect. It means that a particular player makes everyone on the TEAM better. It could be just his presence, it could be how he carries himself on and off the court, it could be how other teams have to game plan for him, it could be how he cheers his teammates on, it could be his leadership, it could be how he steps up when things arent going well. Hopefully you get my point. As i said before there are a lot of great players on this TEAM, and each and every young man brings something unique to the table. That’s why they have had the some sucess and that is what makes them so much fun to cheer for.

Canisius coaching staff did an excellent job of using that pick and roll to pull Agbeko away from the bucket and defending on the perimeter for much of the night, which allowed them to take advantage on the glass because of rebounding as a unit. Rehbaum played like the player of the year candidate he is; Joes point guard play was a major culprit in this game in which Moser i felt looked for his shot alittle too much which in turn limited the higher percentage scoring possibilities of the regulars. Free throw shooting was a major dissapointment for Joes as well; Had to have missed at 13 to 15 at the line. Additionally, game was Canisius tempo from 30 seconds into first quarter to ending buzzer. Lastly, Joes didn’t get back on defense for much of second half and all of 4th quarter. Referees played too much into this game for much of the game rather than letting the players determine game. Great the players were able to fight through it and determine the results in the end. Best high school game in western new york this year for sure and congratulations to the Crusaders for a much needed and deserved victory.

I disagree with your assessment of Moser, and particularly, your use of the word culprit. That’s pretty poor word choice to use when describing the play of a high school athlete, especially one who is coming off an 18 point, six assist performance.
I’m also not sure which regulars you’re referring to with higher percentage scoring possibilities either. I don’t think his role in the Joe’s offense limits anyone, but rather creates increased opportunities.

  16. Division1 Avatar
    Division1

Maybe could have been a better choice of word than culprit as we are breaking down high schoolers of whom most will never play d1, d2 or d3. However St. Joes struggles to score whenever he begins to aggressively look for his offense. Majority of those 6 assists I am sure came in the first half when he looked to distribute more. Offense began to look stagnant as he begun to penetrate into lane more in the third and fourth quarters looking to get to the line rather than dish off to cutters. I stand by my assesment, St. Joes is a much better team when he is primarily a distributer as he has been during win streak and during first half of Canisius game.

I do think Moser has a done a pretty good job playing the 1 for Joes but I played same position in prep ball and collegiately so i call it the way i see it; Additionally, I listed a number of reasons for my assesment of the loss, you can disagree or agree it is a free country.

Kudos, CC, players should not be called out in that fashion. Can we call out bad officials(-:?
    That was for you Lucky13.

  20. Patrick Moran Avatar

I agree with both you guys on the Moser point. CC is right in that your wording wasn’t the right choice, and he’s also right about Moser’s statline, in part because from what I seen, in the second half most the St. Joe’s team spent too much time watching Rehbaum once he got hot.
Division you’re at least partially right (from these eyes) that Moser wasn’t distributing as much in the second half. Sometimes though as a point guard when other guys don’t have it that night, you have to increase your scoring.
To me there is one real key with St. Joe’s, and its something the coaches will have to figure out. And that’s a way to have Agbeko be aggressive without being overly aggressive and picking up un-necessary fouls. Both times these teams have played Reggie has been in big time foul trouble and I think it cost them the second time around. Even if he isn’t actually blocking shots his presence on the floor is intimidating. I think he’s the true wild card betweeen these teams because when he’s right and not in foul trouble, Canisius doesn’t have an answer for him.
Another reason Joe’s tasted defeat Tuesday, I think, is they didn’t get the typical great contributions off the bench they usually get from Louie and Escott.
I’d also be careful not to put too much stock into one game. If that’s the case, the Lakers are the worst team in the NBA based on last night. St. Joe’s will be fine and in my opinion, are still the team to beat in MMAA when the playoffs start. They have the big man in Reggie and Rehbaum is well seasoned. Spitler knocks down threes and Moser will do whatever it takes. Don’t discount Chad Kelly’s ability to get a few key hoops as well.
That’s not to take anything away from Canisius at all. They are very capable of winning the Manhattan Cup. Aaron Nevins is more athletic than anyone on either team and can find ways to get points even if his shot isn’t falling. Like I said earlier, for my money Lyons is the most underrated player possibly in all of WNY. They key to them is Hart and Weir. Those two MUST knock down outside shots, such as they did (especially Hart) this past Tuesday. Along with MacDonald, I’d project combined they need to go for at least 24 points to be able to knock off Joe’s again.
I also wouldn’t quite pencil these two in quite yet for a third meeting. Whoever finishes second has a Timon team in the semis (in all probability) that is still dangerous. Sure, they’ve yet to pass a major test this season, but they do have a slew of streaky shooters and when they click, they can go bucket for bucket with anyone.
Both times they played St. Joe’s this year they had them on the ropes. .The first time they blew a five point lead in final two minutes of the fourth quarter, and the second time they were up 12 early in the second. Both times they caved into the pressure and what was once Timon’s trademark (Toughness) has become their biggest weakness.
Still, I wouldn’t want to play them in a one game playoff if I didn’t have too.
Also watched the Canisius/Timon game from a few weeks ago on tape last night in full. Timon matched up well with them, just missed way too many easy shots.
It’s going to be an exciting Manhattan Cup for sure, certainly better than last year when Nichols was far and away the best team in the league. Won’t be any of that heading into next week.

Hate to do this to you coaches Simon and Herlan.. But here’s a video clip from Mike Scarcello’s dramatic buzzer-beating 3 pointer in last year’s palyoffs to send the Joe’s vs Timon game into overtime.

Patrick and Centercourt you are correct in not calling the kids out by so going forward I will refrain from it; and to all my apologies. I do agree that Agbeko is the wildcard in that matchup along with most matchups Joes is involved in and Joes didn’t get anything from the bench. However, the Crusader guards kept getting into the lanes and very very strong rebounding as a team. They promised to take that game and did a heck of a job in getting it done. Nevins is the engine, and Lyons is pest that never quits. Gotta love the kid.

Moser had the two baskets that initially held off Canisius’ run in the fourth. Niagara Falls has too much for St. Joe’s and they will win by at least 14. The Lakers are the worst team in the NBA. They have the worst soul.

CC, can you recall a late seaon non-league game in recent years that has matched two WNY powers like tonights contest on Kenmore avenue? To call the game meaningless would be insulting, especially so to that which is truly meaningless. Whatever that may be.
Cannot wait to see the athletes get after each other tonight for little more than pride in their schools and respect for thier families, classmate and friends.
Hoping it goes down to a final shot attempt that drops or rims out making it a true epic High School basketball game.

Nice to see all the love for Gordon Lyons. I was singing his praises last year.
Division 1 may have used the wrong word in choosing culprit, but I agree with his assessment of Joe’s and Moser. Think Joe’s is a better team with him as a pass first shoot later point guard.
