In November, 101 teams between Section VI and the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association began preparation for the 2010-2011 season.  Now with just two left standing, I'm sure most people have some idea about who they think deserves some recognotion for postseason honors.

Sometime in early April, I will release the All-Centercourt Team (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th team, along with 35 honorable mention selections).  I will also select a Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.

One thing that I've noticed from taking a preliminary glance, this season there were a lot of good teams with balance, which makes the players more difficult to separate.  Who's the best player on McKinley? Canisius? Timon? Will South? Bennett? Maple Grove? Newfane? Clarence? Niagara Falls?  Ken West?  I could keep going, but I'm sure you get the point.

I also think there will be quite a bit of discrepancy in how everyone will look to fill out the first and second team.  Once you get to third team and beyond, it'll be all over the place.  There's plenty to debate about where the players will get slotted after this season…and it's going to be a lot of fun.

In the comments section below, let us know your thoughts on where you think the players should be placed.  Remember that it's always a better argument if you can say who you would have in a spot, rather than to simply state a player should not be there.

I'm looking forward to the discussion, as this is always one of the best topics to close out each season with.

What a win for Jamestown, I feel as though my blogging career has finally reached it’s culmination! After blogging on Jamestown for almost 7 years dating back to the former Buffalohoops site I think it was called? This is the apex for Jamestown basketball. Let’s bring home that state championships boys!

Though I’m not saying I agree or disagree with your sentiments, would you care to share some examples of players you don’t agree with?
(Everybody is entitled to their own opinions and all-star teams aren’t a science, I’d like to hear your perspective)
WNY Hoops: I couldn’t be in Glen Falls so I followed along Keith’s blog today.> that’s the first time I was actually nervous waiting to hear that crackhead scrolling sound every few seconds. That was amazing.. I really liked Jamestown all season long. They got the best player in WNY, the most versatile player in WNY and a solid supporting cast. I certainly can’t say I expected them to win in Glenn Falls, but I did predict they’d knock off Niagara Falls and win Section VI. I’m so happy for that program, Ben Drake is a true first-class person.

Also, if he stays committed to working on his game, it’s scary to think of how good Jaysean Paige is going to be next year.

I can’t wait to see Paige’s crucial dunk in the late goings of the game… I think this game locked Paige’s POY and Butt’s first team status. I think Joey Campion should atleast get WNY HM as well. This kid is the glue of that Jamestown team, and is so smart and tough with his crucial three he can knock down.

How do you leave Grandits Bailey and Hughes out of there? They were all 1st team all NFL, AHEAD OF JORDAN STREET WHO GOT 3RD TEAM, and arent even honorable mention? WNY is so biased with ECIC and MMA its ridiculous.

Butts isn’t considering either if the colleges mentioned above. Paige will be playing on about 4-5 aau teams as a basic free agent that plays for someone every week.

I don’t know how anyone can make a pick of an all WNY team without stats from all the players. Some kids get more press then others. Is there a way to get all the stats?

In response to Butters from the Glens Falls post:
I’ve never liked the logic “was All-WNY HM” so gets the edge this year. If you think Nevins was better than Lyons this year, then so be it. But where players finished last year should have no bearing on awards for the current season.
So in applying that logic, every season starts over. You have to earn HM this year, even if you were last year. If you were 2nd team last year, it shouldn’t mean you finish no lower than 2nd this year.
I get that players aren’t likely to “get worse”, but it is quite possible that others emerge in a new season and exceed what someone else did the year before.
Davon Alexander was one of two 3rd teamers last year, but that doesn’t mean he gets a spot on the first team this year because he finished ahead of all but one other player entering this season.

    CC,
That is not my logic, That is how I’ve seen it in the past.I agree that each year should be taken for what it is. The Buffalo news should not list what honors were received in the past, Just this years honors. That alone gives it a “weighted” look.

  14. centercourt Avatar

    Thanks Butters, I agree.

  15. Patrick Moran Avatar

In regards to my list, you don’t have to agree with the picks and as I reflect, there’s a few picks that even I myself would like to have a mulligan on now. Based on their postseason run, I can’t fathom Butts not being on the first team. I absolutely feel I should’ve included Grandits on the very least as HM.
Having said, I can assure you a lot of work and a lot of consultation was put into it. I can’t even begin to tell you how much research I did for stats and how many coaches I called and emailed.

The News as I recall uses the he was 3rd team last year and he was HM last year, not to say so and so deserves a spot here or there this year, but I believe in a way that separates players that are close. Of course my memory is likely faulty given my advancing Alzheimers and I certainly can’t speak for Keith, but just seems to me that’s the way it has been explained previously.

  18. Patrick Moran Avatar

I’m considering it, not that it really matters at this point because it’s already out. My original thinking was the more HM’s I had the less meaningful it was, but at the same time there’s at least a few kids who definitely deserve mentioning.
I”m actually considering doing a nice article and coming out with the “All-Snub” team.

Couldn’t agree more, case in point last year when the spring season had concluded and the All-WNY baseball team came out. A young man (who came from a small school) who received a Division 1 scholarship and was a member of the Western Empire State squad was not even a honorable mention when released.

In an effort to keep this on a somewhat positive note I am going to try explain why I chose the first team and not discuss why I didn’t choose others. I am also not going to pick HMs as there are probably too many to count.
    My teams would be:
    1st Team-
WNY POY – Paige (ECIC 1 POY) – he led his team farther than anyone else on top of his obvious talents as an athlete and a basketball player.
Rehbaum (MMA POY) & Holland (City 2 POY) – I put both of these guys together because they are similar to Paige in their athleticism and basketball talents on both ends of the floor – I believe that all 3 have D1 ability. They were also team leaders in every sense of the word and a cut above everyone else with their ability to play several positions. At the end of the game I want the ball in the hands of one of these two guys. Coach Simon and I agree that Connor is the BEST all-around player that we have had in our 11 years at St. Joes.
Fisher (City 1 POY)- I believe the BEST one-on-one defensive player I saw all year and the leader of one of the top teams in WNY.
    My fifth guy is
Stasiak(ECIC2 POY) – A true warrior in every good sense of the word. Shoots the 3, runs the floor on the break as well as anyone and finishes. You know you’re going to get his best every night.
    2nd Team –
    Nevins
    Lyons
    Butts
    Harrington
    Feagin
    3rd Team –
    Taplin
    Estarfaa
    Bova
    Knight
    O’Connell
    4th Team
    Agbeko
    Farrant
    Avery
    Funk
    Alexander

I was just reading Morans all star team on his website. I think he did a nice job picking the players but I have to say that he goes on to say that some of the PUBLIC school teams had disappointing seasons with a 12 – 8 record. Any team that puts players on the floor without recruiting them like the private schools and can pull off an above 500 record is successful. I love these writers who because they have a forum seem to know what a successful season and what is not, These comments are for people who have no idea what coaching is or what it is like to coach a team. To make these rediculous comments shows what these writers really know. Westfield had a nice season at 12-8. Never consider that disappointing – GET A CLUE. What I call disappointing is the Nichols team doing what they did when you go out and recruit the best players around. McKInnon has been at a ton of games this past winter recruiting knowing he would be the next coach at Nichols -FACT !!

I have got 2 say it felt like being at an NCAA final last night in Newark. I was LOVING watching the Ohio State fans walk out in tears after Knight hit that shot. I can’t stand that team and really hate the entire Big 10 so 2 c them have ZERO teams in the Elite 8 is just outstanding. Was happy Carolina won as I hope they go all the way. Hoping 4 a Carolina, Butler, UConn, Kansas Final 4 now. We she see. We r doing the 2 hr drive from Manhattan now 2 check out our final 3 HS games of the year at the Fed. I will post the finals just in case any1 cares. Then back 2 the city 2 watch the 2 teams with the most Elite 8 appearences ever play 2 go 2 the Final 4. Should b fun.
With St Mary’s girls losing I won’t get 2 c Keith 2day so Connor’s chances of making the first team just went up (Hahahah-kidding!!!). I still think Nevins gets that last spot but I’ve been wrong my whole life so it could happen again.

Well I must say the Mt Vernon win over Boys N Girls was a VERY good game. Sort of like the Vernon game with HHH West last weekend. Boys was up 22-11 early but Jabari Hinds led a big comeback as 8 players scored 4 Vernon and they advance 2 the AA State Championship game with a 70-63 win over the team ranked #14 in the USA Today poll. They will meet Christ the King tomorrow 4 all the marbles. Collegiate on a layup at the BUZZER won the Fed B title for the 4TH year in a ROW over Salesian. Getting ready 2 c if St Mary’s can finish the season unbeaten as they play co Mr Basketball Lchraf Yacoubou and Long Island Luthern in the last game of the nite 4 the overall A title. Wasn’t here last night but Luthern must b good as they knocked off Jamesville and D Coleman by 4.
Albany is NOT BAD AT ALL! They have the top seats all covered and the court looks good. They seem 2 have done a good job, PA announcer much better, media seating good. TV situation – which is key 4 us – was perfect 1 near the bathrooms.
Didn’t c much of the Collegiate win except the last 4 minutes – 2 busy watching BUTLER advance 2 the Final 4 AGAIN! WOW! Very happy! Hope 2 catch the end of UConn advancing after this game ends but I think Arizona may win that 1. Ok that is the report from the final HS weekend of the year.

i know for a fact that feagin was 1st in NFL voting, Grandits was 2nd and Bailey was 3rd. not sure on the rest. but you cannot leave dante bono off either. he won every game for a bad kenmore east team by himself, brought them to buff state and was just named the MVP for the nfl team in the all star game. very good scorer he just missed a lot of the season bringing down his numbers and not giving him much attention. definitely deserving of at least an HM spot

Good news 4 Canisius or Joe’s next year is that 9 of the 10 starters in this game between St Mary’s and Luthern are Seniors! So with S Weir and Taplin next year 2 go along with Reggie underneath Joe’s looks like they should play Jamesville next year with Coleman as a senior in the overall Fed A final 2012 should b a great game!

Hey Lucky 13 there were missing SEVEN players but only ONE starter. BUT – good point – they may have won that game if they had their full team. Mike Taylor is AWESOME 4 them and going 2 Rutgers next year. The kids C Lewis in this game may b going 2 Canisius….Mary’s up 35-32 at Half…VERY good game so far.

WOW what a 2nd half for Luthern they DESTROYED them 78-51. Real final was against Jamesville. So much 4 St Mary’s unbeaten season. Really Luthern should have been playing Christ the King in AA instead of being in Class A kind of a joke.
Saw last 2 minutes of UConn! Got the 2 I wanted 2 win today. 2 UNREAL NCAA games! Thought that last 3 was going in 4 Ariz! Back on the road now 2 NYC getting set 4 tomorrow. GO HEELS!!!!

  47. Hoopfan Avatar

Good luck to Safir at Vassar. Their the worst team in the Liberty league that only won two games last year, one against a Culinary school. As someone who saw all the Spartans games this year, I thought Jonathan played his role well for them but if were talking All-WNy I think thats probably a stretch with teammates like Taplin who’s a lock and Young and Moranto getting consideration ahead of him. Also, the team had guys like Hussain, Konotopsky, and Butler who all had solid years as well and were very good in their roles. My guess is Taplin and Young will be the only 2 from WN. The biggest problem WN will have getting players on All-WNY is when teams took away Taplin no one else ever really took over.

Highly recruited by NAIA’s Daemen which is moving Ncaa division 2 in a year and Buff St. who just reached the sweet sixteen in Ncaa division 3! Miles had a great year and lets not forget when Miles and Fisher(EAST) went head to head during the yale cup and Miles came out on top.
