D1-what would you say the success rate is for those kids and most prep situations have to do with academics. I dont know Paige situation I am not including him in this thought. Prep costs as much as a yr of college at some and are horror stories at others

From D1 “There are quite a few kids most years in western new york that can play at division 1 levels but because majority of high school teams locally do not play kids at the position that they would be competing at in college and d1s and d2s want to be certain how a kid will compete at that level due to financial commitments they are making.”
Dead on solid analysis D1. Too many skilled 6’2″-6’4″ players with ball handling skills end up being 3’s, 4’s or 5’s when they can excel as a 1 or a 2, and become appealing recruits, at the very least by the Big Four schools.
That said, There are many D3 schools that play at very high levels and can compete and win against many lower level mid major d1’s.

    Guest I can’t really say that prep school aids a kid academically other then helping them to qualify through ncaa clearinghouse. A subpar student will be just be that, a subpar student. Success rate if you are playing is pretty good; Most guys in starting lineup should get a full ride somewhere. Most preps will help with tuition and parents need to be realistic of how good there kids really are. JohnFrederickPSU, you are right that a very good d3 could take down a d1, anything can happen but even best d3s would have to have a lot of things go there way that day and d1 players would have to come into game not dialed in;

D1 i disagree with the playing time idea at prep and most kids have gone for academic reasons but lets name some kids that did or didnt go d1 after prep your up

The opportunity to be a scholarship basketball player is not necessarily The Holy Grail of amateur basketball. Unless it is about not having to make a financial commitment, or thier is hope for an individual to play somewhere after graduating at the professional level, either in the States or overseas and D1 or D2 is seen as the only viable path to that goal.
If a quality education and likely playing time, right away is the primary focus of the aspiring college player, than D3 may be the most logical choice but as always each situation is different and it comes down to personal choice.

Here’s a non-hoops High SChool note regarding a hoops player.
Source tells me that Florida State’s offensive coordinator and recruiter James Coley is in town, scouting St. Joe’s QB Chad Kelly

Guest a full ride can be D1, D2 and NAIA. To me success is a fullride to a place you might not have made it to minus prep ball, unless you went juco. I don’t want to get into naming names of non success stories about prep ball, they are many and they know who they are and don’t need me to name them. The success stories are many and those names are known to most. Overall, if a kid can play and they go into right system for his or her skill set they should benefit. Key is like college, you should be successful if you go into system that maximizes your skill set and you can earn PT. Most kids I encountered on prep circuit went to compete against the best comp day in and day out, as well as to play potential college position and hopefully higher level schools will recruit them. Small percentage of athletes were there for academics. JFPSU, I agree that it is better for a kid to go where his skills will be utilized rather than being a practice dummy at a higher level then skill set.

What MIG? No trip to the Kentucky Derby before Vegas to have your picture taken with Tom Hammond, where you’ll be kicking back with D. Wayne Lukas sipping Mint Juleps or hanging out in the $50.00 betting window line smoking cigars with Pitino, Calipri and possibly Jay Trotter. I’m suprised in you, and I have to say a little disappointed.

I regret to inform everyone that the WNY baskebtall community lost a great coach/teacher of the game. Drake Francescone passed away over the weekend from his battle with cancer.
Drake coached high school basketball for City Honors throughout his teaching career, right up until his retirement in 2003. I had the pleasure of playing for this man for 4 years which included a Yale Cup championship, 2 sectional championships, a state runner-up, and the schools only state championships in 2003.
It’s sad to see such a great teacher of the game pass away so soon. Those 4 years under him were filled with some of my fondest memories for myself and the rest of our basketball team. As talented as our teams were in 2002 and 2003, we would not have gotten a sniff of Glens Falls without him. He was able to take a team of smart, quick, undersized basketball players and turn us into champions.
Drake also coached the lady Centaurs volleyball team to numerous state championships in the early 90s and also coached the Boys Cross Country team to its only sectional title in 2001.
    RIP Coach.

Very sad to hear about Coach Francescone. He was a great coach and a good friend. It is rare to see a coach excel in three sports as he did. We will all miss him.

As a fellow K-West grad I was fortunate to know Drake through there and coaching. I did not know him as well as SC2003 but was always impressed with his enthusiasm for coaching and for life. I cannot ever remember not seeing him smile and it was infectious. This is a loss for everyone and he will be missed.

Here’s some high school hoops news.. Tremmell Fisher and 8 others have signed on to play for N.C.C.C. — Dut Dour (Timon) and John Black (McKinley) among them.

A very nice class coming in for head coach Bill Beilein at NCCC – Tremmell Fisher was a first teamer, and John Black, Jake Hughes, Davon Ferguson, Kadeem Hillman, and Marc Morreale were each honorable mention selections on the All-Centercourt team.

Thanks for the positive posts. I am really looking forward to working with this class in the upcoming year. Maybe we can entice a few of you to come watch a game next year.

    Coach Beilein,
Keep in touch with me via email at: pmoran@buffalosportsdaily.com . I’ll defnitely come out and so some stories, I’m a big fan of that incoming class, especially Tremmell. He’s a real well-rounded, talented kid; arguably my favorite player to watch in WNY last year.

NFHS is headed back to the PRimetime Shootout with games against St. Benedicts and Colts Neck. We are very excited for the opprtunity to play in the same event as the nationally ranked teams involved. Hopefully a step in the right direction for the program

Sal shouldn’t teams have to win their Section to get invited to that thing? You would think Jamestown with Paige coming back and being a clear favorite to repeat as Sectional champs would be asked first. I get history of the program and such but c’mon! Anyway hope you are all having a good summer.

Unfortunately Primetime could care less about section 6. We were fortunate to build a relationship with them in the past and our kids will have a great experience, my hopes is we can compete on such a big stage. Even if we can’t it will be a great experience for the kids. I am sure Ben has some great non league stuff for his guys. Thanks for your support.
