Hoops Festival tryouts

With Empire State Games no longer existing, the BCANY (Basketball Coaches Association of New York State) has come up with an alternative for Boys and Girls HS basketball players.  BCANY will be hosting a "Hoops Festival" on August 5th – 7th in Johnson City (Binghamton area).  There are a few changes from the old Empire Games format.  Most importantly, Buffalo will now have it's own team.  So will Rochester – in fact there will be eight separate regions instead of six, so more kids will be able to be involved.

Players returning to high school next year are eligible – no longer by age.  Coaches need to be BCANY members, so if you are not, your players would not be eligible, so please become members for your kids sake.

Buffalo area tryouts will be  Monday June 6th & Thursday June 9th at St. Mary's HS (142 Laverack Ave. in Lancaster) from 7:00-9:00 p.m.   Practice will be less time extensive than it was for Empires.

There should be a good response from college coaches that will be able to see 80 of the best New York State kids play together in one setting. Please spread the word quickly to anyone that may not have heard about this opportunity for the kids.

Call 585-746-8327 if you have more questions.

Olean won the large school championship at St. Bonaventure University team camp Sunday, beating Warren, Pa. in double OT.
Battled Kenmore West in the semis, winning in OT in a real bloodletting. Ken West seemed to view the fact that personal fouls weren’t recorded (only team fouls were counted; personals were not) meant they could hack at will and keep kids in the game. Their coach got T’d twice, including during the break before OT.
Some other incidents make it clear there wasn’t a lot of class at K-W — at least on this day. Easy to see where the kids take their cues.
Olean, featuring mostly rising sophomores and juniors, trounced Greece Athena, John F. Kennedy and Williamsville South. Lost once, to Greece Arcadia.
    Looking forward to December…

Big ups to Reggie from St. Joes for his 21 point, 14 rebound performance against Indiana Elite AAU featuring 2 ESPN top 50 frontline players Hanner Perea, and Jeremy Hollowell.

I am impressed and I bet he got those nombers playing around the basket where is where he belongs. Not a 3, He is going to give Paige a run for player of year. Joes could be #1 team this yr.,they just got a transfer from Tennessee and Reggie’s cousin is soon to land and talk of a 6’5 Serbian football player transfering in,not sure if he is a hoops guyjv transfer from canisius will give them guard support. WOW thats alot of transfers including Reggie and Chad Kelly and Cerza from O Hara

Use Your Left-From what I was told, Olean was the beneficiaries of some “home cooking” from the officials against Ken West. The Ken West coach was T’d up once for asking the official why he ignored his player who was asking for a timeout at the end of regulation.

So Jack you have heard about Brazilian hoops legend Oscar Schmidts 6′ 6″ 14 year old son’s ability to fill it up. You’ll be stunned at the range Jr. has. When you’re in South America on your recruiting pilgrimmage make sure you swing by Argentina, I’m sure you’ll see a bunch of Ginobili clones who would love to play their high school hoops at Joe’s.

Wayne, I wasn’t told … I was there to witness Ken West’s bush league tactics. They got way out of control and then looked for any excuse except their own thug play to explain the loss. (They gave up an 8-point lead with 2 mins. left in regulation — sophomore-to-be Nick Schmidt hit a 3 as time expired to tie it.)
And, for more clarification, not one of the three referess working the game was from the So. Tier.
One more thing: Olean was without 3 of its top 7 players. Three rising sophomores (Schmidt, Eckstrom and Hennessy) and two rising juniors on the court in crunch time. That’s a shorthanded B school (Olean is a B for 2011-12) beating a AA which fancies that this might be the year it takes down the Falls in N-O play.
OK, it’s summer ball, but Olean showed a lot in winning that game … whatever one might hear from the good sports at Ken West.

couple of things- Jack relax quick question how many kids in top 7 do you see on varsity will have played jv at Joes? I dont mind it its hard to keep up in Catholic league(wnys best)all the schools are getting kids from elsewhere. Its the nature of the beast, really not a knock just a sign of the times. Simon is one of my favorite guys in the area, had great success and dont think he has had 1 D1 kid(not sure) you guys have done a great job there. 2. I was not there but am surprised about KW story, never saw that side of them but it is summer and yes they will compete for AA next season no matter what summer brings

Speaking of St. Joes and recruiting. A local college coach at ESPN AAU event in Florida this week said St. Joes Reggie Agbeko is looking like an elite player nationally after averaging 26 points and 10 rebounds against top 100 competition and finishing up the week with a 41 point and 13 rebound performance against nationally ranked Boo Williams. Sounds like type of talent that was not recruited to St. Joes……right.

According to espn Reggie isn’t ranked and they list Towson Iona St. Peters Robert Morris LaSalle as interested schools. Stan Weir does not have any schools listed. Weir is ranked 82. Just like Weir Paige doesn’t have any schools listed either. Will be a fun year. Think we’ll see each of these guys as first teamers and if Reggie has improved as much as everyone is saying he should be the run away poy.

  26. sam Avatar
    sam

I guess it is a grade. Like 82 out of 100. They have Reggie at 40. Cannot say why he is so low. Maybe they just have not changed it. Not sure.

  27. Ranker Avatar
    Ranker

Stan Weir’s ESPN ranking is #106 shooting guard in the country; His rating of 82 is the grade given by espn on his skill level after completing their evaluation of him. Reggie Agbeko’s grading is a 40 because he is still being evaluated. All players still being evaluated are given a rating of 40, and at completion are given a skill grade which is a maximum of 100 as well a postion ranking and an overall ranking if they make the espn top 100 for seniors, espn super 60 for juniors and terrific 25 for sophmores.

  28. sam Avatar

Interesting. Thanks for the education. Wonder why Reggie is still being evaluated. Sounds like he has made a big impression on the recruiting trail.

  29. Ranker Avatar
    Ranker

ESPN generally takes months to evaluate a player; majority of ranked kids have been known quantities for 2, 3 years sometimes longer. Pretty certain that Agbeko being an unknown and having been in US under a year, as well as starting to establish himself only since spring and summer ball started would be the reason he is still being evaluated. I suspect he may be rated very high based on his Orlando performance. He outplayed Hanner Perea and jeremy Hollowell (Espn overall ranks of 49, and 41). Perea was also best player on prep team Stan Weir played for last season. He also outplayed and hit game winner on Auburn commit Shaquile Johnson, known to many on youtube as 747 and best dunker in high school with 19 points and 17 rebounds, as well as a 30 point outing against Florida Gator commit espn overall #51 ranked Michael Frazier and a host of other ranked players.
Oklahoma and Gonzaga are among schools that have offerred.

pat you can’t be a BEAST when you score 0, 4 and 0 and turn the ball over ten times in 3 games. Get your facts straight before you lose credibility. Best players over three games were Agbeko, Adam Weir and Hart. Not only did they lead in scoring and passing, Reggie in rebounding as well, they did not make dumb mistakes and did not dribble the ball looking for theirs until the paint came off the floor.

  43. guest Avatar

reggie not dominating like i thought he should.he is injured now. they play for 5th place tomorrow a little disapointing. stan weir? taplin? williams? how are they doing?

  44. sam Avatar

Who made dumb mistakes and dribbled the ball looking for theirs until the paint came off the floor? Sure sounds like some disharmony on the team. Can’t win that way.

Stan Wier left after first game with knee issues. Agbeko was playing through back pain and a tender ankle but still pushed until reinjuring same ankle. Game 1, western new York shooting 8 for 40 from three point range is a good indicator of why they couldn’t win. Really, wow I don’t know how much more Agbeko could have done under circumstances. He led or tied for scoring and dominated on rebounding. Taplin looked young. Hart, Aaron Frazier and Adam Weir looked good. Williams disappeared as well.

  46. guest Avatar

Too many shooters, no penetrators, and no frontline help for Agbeko. Huge drop off after Agbeko, Adam Weir, and Hart (In that order)

  47. get your facts straight Avatar
    get your facts straight

when you lose by 28 to a team of comparable ability there is plenty of dumb and selfish play to go around. Either hit the O boards or get back on D but don’t do neither. Suggestion: how about undersized point guards with average athletic ability and average scoring and shooting ability play pass first, me last option and subscribe to the best hoops adage of making everyone around them better instead of the opposite. Stopping the other guy once in a while is also good to do. The D1 issue in the news article today is as much about poor fundamental play area wide as it is exposure. A few area kids can rise above it and be part of smattering of college players but overall the quality of play and players is and has been on a downhill slide for many years. It’s a shame and very hard to watch especially if you know the difference. A BEAST….. please you don’t even know what one is.

Arent we all experts in our own mind lol.D1 article forgot to mention kids not being good enough and academics. Again I think it belittles D3 hoops which is where 98% of wny kids fit and is a very good level. Exposure although on the list of why kids don’t get scholarships certainly not #1

Buffalo is up on Rochester, 56-49 in the second half of Sunday’s game. I’m not up there for the tournament, but my wife is (to watch her nephew) and is texing me some updates.
Again, second half info, but I’m told Ryan Whepley is playing really good in place of Reggie, who’s out with a sprained ankle. Adam Wier is having a real good game as well. Buffalo was up by as much as 17 but Rochester has been chipping away.
