There may be other games played before it, but high school season in WNY officially gets underway each year at the Daemen Athletic Facility.  The Pastor-Cooper Showcase, formerly known as the Al & Rose Pastor Tournament, is held each year as a memorial tribute to Al Pastor, Rose Pastor, and Jerry Cooper.  This prestigious annual event has been committed to bringing in some of the area's top programs for over 25 years, and in doing so, it also brings WNY's hoop-heads back together again.

The event's director, David Cooper, said the reason for a change in format from a tournament to a showcase was due to public schools losing two regular season games.  Moving to a showcase format was the best way to ensure the quality of games would continue in the same tradition this event has always provided.  This year's event will unfold over the course of three nights, with a girls game proceeding two boys games on each night.  On the boys side, four of the six matchups have a Yale Cup squad facing a MMAA team.  As is always the case with this event, there will be major poll implications and free admission to watch it all unfold.

All three of Friday’s game should be strong games and will certainly have implications. GI and SH are possibly the two best girls teams in the area and is always a good barometer between the MMA and section.
McKinley/Joe’s should be interesting…McKinley returns a decent amount from last year’s very solid team while Joe’s only returns Reggie. Even if Kelly plays I don’t think he’ll have enough practices by then. East also loses a lot but they always seem to reload and they did have some promising underclassmen see time last year. Timon of course returns their trio of guards.
Riverside/Canisius would have been an ideal match up.

Interesting format. No longer a tournament style event. Good and bad I guess. More teams-good, but no longer the tourney flavor.

Thank you MR. Centercourt. What games do u think will b the most interesting and best games to c?

The most interesting game for me will be Canisius vs. OTC/MEC.
There are heavy expectations for the Crusaders, while the Kats may be flying well below the radar entering this season. I’m interested to see how OTC/MEC (Class C) competes with a known commodity such as Canisius. Last year, Canisius came out very strong in its first game of the season and clobbered Riverside, scoring 97 points. If the Kats can hang with the boys from Delaware Ave., they would be the early favorites for a Section VI title in their class.
The East vs. Timon game would hold more interest for me if the Panthers had a better history of coming out of the gate strong. East plays at Daemen every year, but usually looks like a much stronger team as the season wears on. I think the Tigers will be eager to make a statement early on, especially after a disappointing season a year ago without any signature wins.
The best game of the event looks like St. Joe’s vs. McKinley…two teams that I fully expect to be top ten large schools at both the start and finish of the season.

Serious — and perhaps reckless — accusations against Coach Sal in the Jaysean Paige Leaves Jamestown thread.
From everything I’ve seen, Sal appears to care a lot about WNY basketball as a whole and he seems to embrace his NFHS kids playing the best competition possible.
Would like to see more before making any kind of judgment…

Excuse my ignorance but, why do the posted names McShea is God,Pat M,From the front row,Roger W,CC Loves MIG,Help me understand, and Wise Roger all appear in blue and when pointed to,display the centercourt.typepad URL?

Actually guest every comment on every post is blue. But hey nice try. Are you suggesting CC himself is planting comments under different names to get more action here? Trying to rip CC’s blog and suggest none of these people use it a bit strange.
Guest do your realize YOUR post is in blue and when you point to it displays the ‘centercourt.typepad URL’
FYI the URLs are automatically linked – read under the ‘post a comment’ box.

If I’m suggesting anything, it’s that they’re all MiG’s comments and he’s displaying the URL. I don’t know why, just as his joke, I guess. CC’s posted by name has not shown up in blue so he’s not displaying the URL. Most of them on here are not in blue and don’t put any URL under their e-mail address. The only other one I see is Patrick Moran because he wants to be linked to his sportsdaily site. Add Pat Look Above and Sam to the list.:-)

Well boys I am back! Glad 2 c I have been accused of planting some stories. Al Pastor 2nite! I was in South America 4 a few weeks with my Uncle who is a Priest quite the eye-opener.
Btw if Sal did ‘get’ Paige 2 leave I think that is HILARIOUS!!!! Smart move! I was wrong about Taplin I guess I had a bad ‘source’! Canisius should still b very good.
Not sure there r any ‘great’ games 2 look 4ward 2 this year but Olean-E Aurora Saturday March 3rd at Buff State 4 the B title – unless they are B1 and B2 in which case it would b Tuesday March 6th – should b really good. I don’t know if Riverside is an AA this yr but if they r I could c them playing Falls tough in the AA title game. Canisius-Joe’s both those games (and a 3rd likely) should b fun.
SO anyway looking 4ward 2 a great year starting 2nite. I hope 2 c CC, Hoopster, Bulls Fan, Hollywood and every1 else. Don’t 4get the pizza sucks so eat b4 the game. Also ticket prices have stayed the same I hear so we should b cool there!

EA is in A-2. Theyre the last team in…so Olean has quite the clear path. Also, no city teams are in AA.
