In each of the two prior seasons, Canisius has earned a share of the MMA league title. In 2010, they shared it with Nichols and a coin toss was needed for seeding. Last year, the Crusaders finished even with St. Joe's, and another coin toss was neccessary. This season, after a little help from St. Francis, Canisius tossed the Marauders aside to take the title and the one seed – no coin required.
Aaron White was good late, Adam Weir was great early, and Matt Hart was near perfect from downtown, as Canisius claimed the Monsignor Martin Association league title and the top seed in the Manhattan Cup playoffs with 78-60 victory over St. Joe's. White scored all eight of his points in the second half, Weir scored 12 of his game-high 23 points in the first quarter (including the game's first nine in less than two minutes), and Hart effortlessly rained down six of seven attempts from 3-point land. Canisius came away with the advantage in all four quarters and kept the party going all afternoon for the largest gathering of students from one school any WNY game has seen this season.
Canisius sprinted out to a 15-0 lead before the Marauders even realized the game had tipped off. After waking up, St. Joe's got an emphatic baseline dunk from Reggie Agbeko that drew a foul and was converted for a three-point play. The play gave St. Joe's a spark and they had closed to within four points at the end of one. Twice in the second quarter, the Marauders cut the lead to two points, but they would never get any closer or own a lead in the game.
After heading into intermission with an eight point advantage, the Crusaders increased the gap to 11 points after three quarters. The Marauders trimmed the lead to nine points at the start of the fourth, but Canisius responded with nine straight points to create the margin they would win by.
Hart finished the game with 22 points for Canisius, while St. Joe's was led by Agbeko's 19 points.
An interesting subplot is the impact this game had on the upcoming matchups. The loss puts St. Joe's in the second seed, meaning they must host a St. Francis team on Saturday that just defeated them. For Canisius, an easier first round matchup awaits in the winner of the play-in game between Nichols and Cardinal O'Hara. However, because the Crusaders are the top seed, they now find themselves on the same side of the bracket as Bishop Timon/St. Jude…hardly a prize for the league champ.
Stay tuned, the most wonderful time of the year is here!
