Heading onto last night's rivalry tilt at Newfane, the second place Panthers sat two games out of first in the Niagara-Orleans league.  Even if they beat Wilson, they'd need to win out and get help from another team to catch up in the league race, an unlikely prospect.   It's possible that Thursday night's game was played as much for pride as anything, and after the first meeting between the two this season, an emphatic Lakemen victory, the Panthers' pride had already taken a hit.  As it turned out, they were too proud to take another.

In the latest edition of the Niagara County slugfest, it was Newfane who absorbed the Lakemen's best shot and then finished the fight, delivering a 45-42 win that was secured in the final minute.  With the win, the Panthers improve their overall record to 13-2 on the season, while handing Wilson its first league loss .

Newfane had the Blue Zone screaming from the onset, as Scott Kneeland opened the scoring with a long-range bomb that helped the Panthers race out to a 7-1 start.  It wasn't until past the quarter's midway point that the Lakemen hit their first field goal, a 3-pointer from Pat Diez.  That shot served as an early spark for his team, as Wilson would score 11 straight points and led 12-8 after one.

After a Lakemen bucket from Dustin DiLaura to start the second quarter, Newfane got another '3' from Kneeland as part of a 7-0 run that put the Panthers back on top, 15-14.  Wilson responded by closing the first half on an 8-1 run and took the game's momentum into the intermission.

Twice in the third quarter, Wilson was able to stretch its lead to eight points and looked like they might be ready to break the game open.  Trailing 30-22 at the 3:53 mark of the third, Newfane was once again ignited by Kneeland's sharp-shooting.  The senior connected again from beyond the arc and came back on the next possesion with another basket to spark a 9-2 Panther surge that closed the game to a 32-31 Lakemen lead in the final minute in the third.   Wilson junior Matt Baker then checked into the game, promptly swishing a '3', and it seemed that despite Newfane's best efforts, the Lakemen would have an answer, and led 35-31 heading into the last frame.

The atmosphere in the Panther's Den was electric as the teams took the court for the final eight minutes and the Panthers seemed to sense the confidence that the home faithful had in them.  Junior Reid Weber came off the bench and got the scoring started in the fourth with a pair of buckets, including a sweet baseline jumper, as part of an 8-2 run to start the quarter that gave Newfane its first lead of the second half, 39-37.  Tyler Martin then showed why he's highly regarded as the league's best player, as the Wilson senior responded to his team's first deficit of the half, by confidently letting a deep 3-pointer fly over a defender, and burying it to regain the lead.

With their pride hanging in the balance, Newfane rewarded the Blue Zone's support with a blue collar finish.  The game's final four minutes were filled with suffocating defense, tie ups, players diving for loose balls, and intense battles in the paint for offensive rebounds.  It was Newfane's grittiest player, Connor Sears, who's will to win was inspirational to his team.  Sears made plays on both ends of the court as the game hung in the balance, and his traditional three-point play with 1:45 remaining, broke a 41-41 tie and gave the Panthers the lead for good.  The game fittingly ended with a potential game-tying Lakemen 3-pointer just missing the mark as the buzzer sounded.

Kneeland led the Panthers with 12 points, while Martin and Diez each paced Wilson with 11 points.

Nice article CC. I would love to see a 3rd game against Newfane. However, as you know, Newfane winning B1 and Wilson winning B2 is a difficult task. We’ll see how the games play out.

    CC,
For the past three seasons I have read so much about this rivalry so I made the trip up. I usually dont get to catch many N-O games and was surprised to see both teams doing so well after who graduated from thier Buff State Runs last season. First off I have to say that if every high school atmosphere was like what was happening in Newfane last night I would want to be there every game.. a student section that filled up half of the bleachers and no seats were empty. Both teams played extremely hard.. even with wilson in a 2-3 zone, the length of wilson and the rotations gave Newfane trouble most of the night. Late in the 4th Newfane just took the defensive intensity to another level…#3 and #23 for Newfane were all over the floor, they would not be denied..like CC said..they willed them through it. #20 DiLaura was impressive for the Lakemen has he had numerous blocks. What a fourth quarter.. you could not hear the person you were sitting next too.. it was well worth the trip up. It was fitting that #23 made clutch FT at the end as he was a huge factor. Great write up CC and I will be up to Newfane for some more Newfane/Wilson in the upcoming years for sure

That’s great to hear. I’m glad I was able to help persuade you to make the trip. You picked a good year to come, as both teams are very competitive again this year. The Newfane players you refer to above are Sean Seefeldt (#3) and Connor Sears (#23).
For anyone starving for more rivalry action, rumor has it that regardless of how the teams are playing that year, the atmosphere for Allegany-Limestone vs. Olean is off the hook. They play at Olean on Tuesday, February 7th.

A huge writeup about Newfane-Wilson but nothing about the Jamestown-W North game??? U would think the guy running this rag was from Newfane or something.
ANYWAY great ending last night at W North. Always fun when Jamestown comes up. Taplin at times goes WAY 2 long w out touching the ball on offense but had a ton of rebounds and at times looked like his all WNY self. Drake made a great move fouling up 1 w under 20 seconds 2 go cause if he lets the clock run down I think Taplin wins it w a runner at the buzzer. Kind of like in football when u c a team let another team score so their offense can get 1 more shot (unless u have Fred Jackson who refuses 2 score and give NEngland the ball back!). Result Tommy Campion (why not just add an ‘h’ to make it easier on all of us-cooler name anyway Tommy Champion!) wins it with a runner of his own. He is cementing his place on 1st team All WNY.
I still feel Drake was off a bit coaching in a jumpsuit. Put himn in his normal suit and Jamestown wins that game by 10-12 points. Also some guy was distracting Jamestown players w a bright light shinning on them as they were about 2 shoot on that end in the 2nd half. That young robost lad needs 2 turn that light down. Also the pizza at the game was poor at best. May as well have been at the Al Pastor it was THAT bad. Anyone reading this who makes pizza: we all LIKE cheese. But not so much that you can’t even pick the slice up without it falling off! And 4 God sakes CUT THE SLICES!!! How hard is it 2 make sure they come apart and not have them stick together.
I also believe CC snuck in without paying but that’s a story 4 another day.
Finally I really hope W North is that ‘4th’ team at Buff State with Falls, Jamestown, and K West. It will b alot more fun March 1st if they r there as opposed 2 falling asleep watching Frontier or NT or Clarence. Taplin should b able 2 get them there. I still can’t believe Chuch was dressed better than Drake last night. Very perplexing indeed.

Haha, MIG my man, that’s a funny post. Excellent points on Drake and his tracksuit. I saw that the other day in J-town vs Orchard Park and was thinking the same thing. Also, I totally agree with the pizza. I’m also very disappointed to say that if you ever came to Westfield for a game, you would see that we do not have any pizza either!

It’s going to be very tight for the 4, 5 and 6 seeds in AA. Frontier is in the fourth spot right now and have four games remaining(Clarence, J-town, OP, WSW), so they will go 3-1 or 2-2. North is 7-4 with three games remaining(WSW, Clarence, OP), so they will have to win all three to have a good chance at climbing out of the sixth spot. NT is 8-3 with three games remaining(GI, KW, NW), so likely 2-1…as always if NT finished in a tie with North or Frontier, or both, they would get they lower seed.
J-town will be 1, Falls and KW will likely coin flip for the 2/3. With the recent slide of Clarence, Lockport now has the inside track to the 7, as they should go 2-1 in the remaining three while Clarence could easily go 1-2. Lancaster has a one game lead on OP in the 9/10 situation, with N-W 11 and WSW 12.
I would think both Falls and KW would like to see North get at least the 5 to prevent a possible quarter match up against them.

I don’t think either KW or Falls needs to worry about Will North. they are one dimensional offensively ( Taplin or no one and sometimes he looks disinterested) and have no help down low. to me it was more a matter of Jamestown playing poorly than WN playing well. jamestown had a decided advantage down low which they failed to exploit and settled for way too many jump shots jump shots. If NF or KW are fretting over Will North than their aspirations for the season can’t extend past the semis at Buff State, if that much.WN team last year was considerably better.
