Two weeks ago, St. Mary's made the long trip south to visit Archbishop Walsh and they were humbled.  The Eagles dominated early, moved the ball beautifully on St. Mary's, and knocked down shot after shot, preventing any hope the Lancers had of getting back in the game.  On Tuesday night in Lancaster, it was senior night at St. Mary's.  Following a pregame ceremony, the Lancer seniors channeled all their emotions into the task at hand, and completely flipped the script on the Eagles.

Following the same formula that worked against them just two weeks earlier, the Lancers spread the floor, moved the ball, and most importantly knocked down the open shots, as they took apart the Eagles, 77-60.  The win secures the third seed in the upcoming Manhattan Cup playoffs, while Walsh slips to the fifth seed.

Jake Denz got things going for St. Mary's, scoring his team's first seven points.  The Eagles hung tough early and had three different players hit 3-pointers in the game's first six minutes (Marcus Clarke, Jake Chapman, & Deon Gayton), to take a 16-13 lead.  Following a Lancer free throw, Nate Meyers hit his second of five 3-pointers that would give St. Mary's the lead.  Nicc Johnson scored the last four points of the quarter to give the Lancers a 21-16 lead after one, and they never looked back.

St. Mary's outscored the Eagles 18-8 in a second quarter that began with Meyers canning a '3' and concluded with him scoring on a difficult hanging layup.  The Lancers finished the half on a 9-2 run and led 39-24 at the break.

Walsh never quit and made several attempts to climb back into the game.  However, each time they would cut into the lead, the Lancers responded.  Five straight for Walsh was met by the same from St. Mary's.  The Eagles hit a '3', the Lancers came right back and did the same.  As the pattern went on, the Lancers confidence grew.  Late in the third quarter, Denz converted an exciting backdoor  lob pass for a bucket and then hit a free throw on the next possession to extend the Lancer lead to 54-35, matching the largest lead they would have in the game.

Meyers finished with a team-high 19 points, Denz scored 17 points, and Johnson finished with 12 points.  All but six of St. Mary's 77 points on the evening came from seniors, including contributions from Frank Sardina, Ryan Winnicki, and Sean Floyd.  Erik Simmons ran the point exceptionally well for the Lancers and combined with fellow senior Devin Redden for 17 points.

Walsh was led by Ryan Whelpley's 23 points, all of which he was forced to work extremely hard for.

St. Mary’s played the best I have seen them in the last 2 years. I think there was some senior night magic happening out there. Walsh is very good and should not drop too far for that loss. After what I saw from Welpley last night he should be at least a 2nd team guy. Looks loke Walsh will get Timon St. Jude now in the playoffs. Should be a great game. St. Mary’s should have no trouble winning the first round but stands little chance of getting past Canisius or Joes.

Ryan Whelpley works as hard as any player in WNY. Great physique and motor and he has always played bigger than he is.
Kind of surprised to hear that he is going to Union College (DIII). That’s a good league, the Liberty League, but I had always thought that Ryan was at least DII caliber.
He’s a National Honors Society student — and Union is a high-end school for academics — but still a little surprised. Have to give all the Walsh kids credit for making Walsh relevant in MMA the last couple years, but Ryan is the real reason why they’ve been competitive.

Did you see St. Mary’s play Timon?
These teams can be up one game and down the next but I don’t think a Timon – Walsh game will be great, think Timon should win pretty handily. St. Mary’s better equipped to beat Timon because of their balance. Timon won easily at Walsh and Walsh did give St. Joe’s a great game but St.Joe’s started playing better after that beating Aquinas, Canisius and Timon twice. Don’t see Timon slipping up at home in the playoffs vs. Walsh.

Fingers crossed for a St. Marys, St Joes, Timon, and CHS final 4. Any team can beat any team, should be fun. As of today who is in 3rd place in MMA?
I think Timon is going to be tough to beat at home for CHS, could be an upset.
@Lucky13 playoffs are at Canisius College.

My understanding of the Manhattan Cup playoffs is that the 3/6 & 4/5 games will be played on the court of either the 1 or 2 seed, meaning Timon would not get a home game in the playoffs.

Guess I’m wrong. The past couple years the first round was at the Koessler Center, correct?

From looking at it it seems the 6 teams in MMA playoffs are a lock.
    Joes/CHS competing for #1
St. Mary’s is locked at #3
    Walsh locked at #4
    Timon locked at #5
    And NC locked at #6
Maybe I’m wrong but that seems to be the case to me.

Thanks CC, I think I’m getting senile. At any rate, I don’t think Timon will have too much trouble if they play Walsh in playoffs where ever they play.

    Lucky13,
I did see St. Mary’s play Timon St. Jude, precisely the reason I think Walsh will give them a good game. Will Timon St. Jude be favored? Absolutely and they should be. But if you have been around this league as long as I, then you know anything is possible. I harken back to the playoffs in ’07 when the final consisted of Frannies and a youth led Nichols team that won it all. Based on Walsh’s first meeting with St. Mary’s and the game they played at St. Joe’s, I think they will be more than prepared for the playoffs. Perhaps it goes the other direction and they get run out of the gym like they were at Canisius. I hope for Coach Palano’s sake Timon St. Jude wins the whole thing.

Should be entertaining. Looking forward to it all.

The Timon/Walsh game will be at the No. 1 seed gym on Saturday the 25th, while the Mary’s vs No. 6 (I think Nia-Cath) will be at the No. 2 seed gym.
    I think.
And yes Ricky, past few years all games were at Canisius College.
