St. Joe's is the only large school in WNY that is unbeaten against local competition, a distinction that has earned them the top spot in the large school poll. Facing early adversity at Timon on Thursday night, the Marauders showed why they're highly regarded as they came back to earn a 61-55 win.
The Tigers looked determined to end their four-game losing streak to St. Joe's, as they jumped out to a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter. The only problem was, the Marauders looked completely unfazed by the sluggish start that led to their early deficit, and they were rewarded for having such composure.
St. Joe's outscored the Tigers, 33-5, over a ten-minute span in the second and early part of the third quarter, to take command of things and gain a 40-26 advantage on the scoreboard. Timon would continue to battle and even got back to within a bucket of the Marauders, but the poise exhibited by St. Joe's enabled them to have an answer for everything.
Reggie Agbeko finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks, but it was his assist on a sharp pass inside to Daniel Maher after Timon cut the lead to two in the fourth, that was his best play of the game. St. Joe's was leading by three with just under two minutes on the clock, when Louis Oliveri found Jaylen Morris for a basket to extend to a five-point lead. On the ensuing inbound, Jordan Glover gained a timely backcourt steal for Timon's Kyle Kobis, and got the ball to Oliveri, who again assisted Morris to put the Marauders in front, 60-53, and put a seal on the win.
Morris and Oliveri each finished with ten points for St. Joe's. Sophomore Donte Williams scored a game-high 16 points for Timon, while Jordan Williams added 14 in the loss.
