Bishop Kearney may have the attention of the high school basketball world in the state of New York for the roster they field.  It includes seven of the top eight players returning from last season's Class A state semifinalist.  One of those players is Syracuse bound after this season.  Another is a top national recruit for the Class of 2015.  One is 6-9 and the other is 6-7.  Then in the offseason, the Kings added another player to the mix who stands an imposing 6-10.  The Kings were basically crowned before the season even began.

Now that the season is underway, the Kings have already had their crowns knocked off, twice in three games.

With the game tied at 20 early in the second quarter, Matt MacDonald delivered a second straight backdoor pass to Adam Weir, who finished the play at the rim for a second straight time, and gave Canisius a lead it would not relinquish.  The Crusaders got 28 points from Weir, 16 points from MacDonald, and a solid contribution from their own big man, 6-8 Jamel Mosley, in scoring a 69-50 victory over Bishop Kearney.  The win is the third straight for Canisius since a season-opening loss to top WNY small school Olean, while the Kings slip to 1-2.

Canisius blew the game wide open during a four-minute stretch in the third quarter, with a 20-4 run that included four 3-pointers: two from MacDonald and back-to-back bombs from Weir, to go up 50-30.  They also scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter, erasing any thought the Kings had of mounting a comeback.

Some game notes:

– Syracuse bound 6-9 Chinonso Obokoh did not make the trip to Canisius and is out indefinitely with a foot injury.

– The win for Canisius marked the third straight time the Kings have made the trip to WNY and headed back east with a loss.  Last year, in another game Obokoh missed, Timon/St. Jude defeated the BK on its court, 61-50, and Falls topped the Kings 52-47 to open this season for both teams.

– The Crusaders defended extremely well all game, while Bishop Kearney seemed to treat defense as an afterthought, except for a brief stretch late in the third quarter in an attempt to answer a Canisius run.

– Ryan Raccuia, who seems to hit a '3' in every game, connected on one in response to a trey from Godspower Ogide, who had airballed an attempt on the possesion prior.

– Mosley finished with eight points and was the best big man in the game, including a nice pump fake and finish in the post.

– Kings' forward Alvin English made the mistake of clappping at Aaron White while guarding him, a gesture that indicates a challenge.  White broke him down with some quick, sick  dribbling and shifting, and created several feet of space.  He didn't even use the space to drive – he simply resumed running the offense.  No one should ever clap at White…that's just asking for it!

– It was good to see the Blue Crew, the Crusader student section, out in full force for a nonleague game on a Tuesday.  They kept me entertained all evening with some very clever and humerous razzing.

– Kings' guard Antwoine Anderson made some spectacular buckets on his way to scoring 20 points, and earned the respect of the Blue Crew along the way.

– Bryant was held to just 10 points.

– Notable Canisius alumni and college football players John Urschel (Penn State) and James Gaines (Miami) were in attendance and received an ovation from the home crowd.

Important is whether they can get anything out of their bigs, Mosley and Cercone. From what I have seen the big three carry almost all the load offensively. That should be enough to get them to the state playoffs, the question is whether once they get there will they encounter the same problem as last year.

  2. WT716 Avatar

Great point. Mosley had his best game of the early season last night. Canisius had the same issue early last year with big men Brendan Tenney and Tim Schifferle. Both of them played soft and got man handled in the first CHS Joes game, but turned it around and definitely helped CHS win the MMA. Mosley will have to play well, just can’t pick up any stupud fouls. Also Ryan Richards has been exceptionally well down low for being out sized in almost every match up.

HA! Great stuff. Get all your comments in b4 the world ends Friday at 6p.
If there is another poll, Canisius will get my #1 vote they were up 25 on Kearney w a minute left and Falls had 2 go 2 OT 2 beat them. Yes I get the Cuse kid didn’t play, but Anderson the PG didn’t play much vs Falls and 20 points vs OT is a big difference.
I think North Collins could beat Falls by 30.

Good point on Washington. The kid has no business on varsity if he isn’t going to play. Now I only saw one game, but if that game was indicative of his PT, put hum on jv so he can play and gain some experience, work on his skills and improve. And let him practice with the varsity too so he can go against Weir.

Centercourt – appreciate your coverage of HS basketball in all areas of WNY. Your updates allow me to follow teams I otherwise would not have a chance to see play especially in the Southtowns. The comments you have are always objective which I like and your blog certainly helps the growth of highschool basketball in this area. Someone should tell the BN that there is more to cover than just SJ and CHS ball. You would think that the staff at BN moonlight as publicists for the MMA. I suppose that is what happens when you have a one newspaper town with no competition for readers. Keep up your good work! Look forward to your updates.

I try not to respond to trolls on the interwidetweetweb. If, in the New Year, anyone wants to stop in at the Prep Talk blog for one of our live chats and attempt to “tell the BN” some of that Haterade-fueled nonsense, we’ll try and clear things up.
Of course, that live chat will probably close to the time that many will be looking forward to a Canisius-St. Joe’s game attended by thousands at Canisius College. It will of course be covered by the BN, and I’m sure that will also fit in with these interesting conspiracy theories.
    Happy Holidays to all.

I employ those who rip Keith to get him on the blog. It’s the only time he lowers himself to leave comments here. Kidding. 🙂
Please feel free to discuss hoops in this forum anytime. I was just venting to someone the other day how I hear a lot of positive feedback from a lot of very knowledgeable people in the HS hoops community, but none of them ever comment here. Maybe a blog like this, driven by good dialogue, is quickly becoming a thing of the past in the Twitter age of everyone commenting all day anyway.
There was a time when I would sound pretty smart until Keith or Earl Schunk or Jack Herlan (then jwh12) or TML1000 or hoopster etc., would set me straight with better or more informed insight than I was offering. The good old days. When the comments section was flooded with a combination of everything from coaches & players to superfans & clueless knuckleheads.
Pat Moran, Andrew Webster, MMA, WNYHoops, State Champs, Tripp, JellyDonut…What happened to you guys?
I spend a lot of time banging away on this keyboard, trying to be interesting or even relevant. Then when the dialogue is crickets except for a quick wave of people defending a kid who gets ripped, only to see all comments on the topic get pulled down anyway, it can be slightly discouraging.
So anyway readers, start talking and stop waiting for something negative to say or respond to. Rant over.
As far as the whole Keith only covers Canisius and Joe’s thing – thanks for the props, but I can’t take them at his expense. If I had his job, which I could not do, you’d be lucky to read half the coverage he provides. I have the freedom to go watch whatever I want. Keith has the responsibility to report. Huge difference. Besides, with the way he and Lauren fly around to seven different locations on some nights in football & hoops season – and then put a highlight video package together covering it all, I don’t know how people could really view the BN as a two-school pony.
    MIG –
I’ve only seen Silver Creek play three times, the same number as Canisius & Joe’s & Timon. Man, that room is getting crowded. I get it though, I’ve had a lot to say about that team. They deserve it. I think they could make a run to Glens.
Talk about get a room – how about you and “the world’s gonna end” thing. You guys have been in a long-term relationship since I’ve met you. At least you’ve had a lot of good jokes about it over the years. The Cookie & Tom (other guy) blast is a great way to close it out. And yes, I remember those two old guys from the Muppets.

Yes, he may…but the education at City Honors can hold up against just about any school in the area.
I would say it is more of if he wants to be a part of a consistently successful program of which he may not ever be THE guy(or at least not for a while) or do what Sterling has done at North and be the main focus on a team of role players, make everyone else around him better and lead the program. Now, Howard is not Sterling, but he is definitely the most talented freshman this section has seen since Sterling two years ago.

Finally Taplin is coming to Nichols. I’ve been reading about it for years on this blog. Good luck in the MMA Sterling. I know this matchup would never happen for political reasons, but I think Olmsted beats the Falls by 6. And MIG, did you ever consider the possibility that CC has a second family in Silver Creek? Somebody should look into that. Now to the treadmill. I’ve been eating like the world was coming to an end. 7 Chicken Parms at the ECIC/MMA challenge might have been a bit too much.

TML1000 – I’m with you man. I didn’t think Washington should have left City Honors in the first place. The team actually has a good young nucleus of players over there right now and he could have been the man there for the next four years He could be playing 28-32 mins a game at the varsity level instead of what he’s doing now at Canisius (maybe 15 mins per game). Also, I believe there are one or two sophomores on the Nichols team that attended City Honors in middle school as well. If everyone stayed they could have had a nice team.
Also, last I checked City Honors is one of the best public schools in the country (#23 according to US News). But then again, I’m an alumni of the school so it’s a biased opinion.

Howard Washington is a freshman … he will have three years to be a top 3 kid in Canisius’ lineup … MMAA schools play six more games a year and have the opportunity to play more, higher profile non-conference games.
I agree that City Honors had the chance to be a pretty good team … but still understood the move.

Centercourt, I have to commend you on the great work you do here, and for providing an outlet for the discussion of WNY basketball. Something that has been missing dearly for football since the Buff News blogs went dead.
Saw a great game tonight between Jtown and Timon at the Mac in Jamestown. Neck and neck all night, until jtown was fouled with about 5 seconds to go to hit two ft’s to break the tie. Timon rimmed a three off at the buzzer that would of won them the game and Jamestown’s tournament. The refs in this game were less than stellar for both teams, and made some very questionable calls throughout.
After seeing all three MMA powers now, I believe that Timon is not only much stronger than Joes but should challenge Canisius for the league.
    Interesting notes from tonight’s game:
Disappointed to see Jamestown has gone with a seasonal program, and not the nightly printouts. Had no idea who anyone was for Timon tonight, but their big man is a legitimate talent with a nice shot.
Good to see Jamestown’s hall of fame team photographer Walt Roode back snapping pictures tonight. As during Jamestown’s game at the Ralph this year, Walt collapsed on the sidelines and was rushed to ECMC after being revived on the sidelines by Jamestown’s team doctor.
Jamestown’s super soph Brendan Kellam has the raw talent and frame to join the greats of Jamestown elite Maceo Wooford and Jaysean Paige if he follows the guidance of Coach Drake.
Timon’s coach appears to be a young talent, that should guide his program to the top of the MMA in no time at all if not this season.
Timon and Bennet must of had treacherous rides home last night, as before the games began Jamestown had barley a dusting of snow, and by the time games were over last night it was a full fledged blizzard from Jamestown to Fredonia with Jamestown topping the local snow totals at over 13″.
Lastly I do not envy any team that has to make the trip to play at Jamestown, as not only is the ride long but the fans and team make it one of the toughest places to play/ most entertaining high school basketball venues in upstate NY.

    CloseOut

Howard Washington is a very good player for a freshman but the two Canisius games I attended he got limited minutes and had no real impact on the game. He certainly has the potential to become an excellent player.
In my opinion the two dominant players at that grade level are Stafford Trueheart on the Canisius JV and Justin Jones on the St. Joe’s JV. Either could start on a lot of varsity teams in WNY. Trueheart is long, a great offensive rebounder and blocks/alters a ton of shots every game. Jones at St. Joe’s, is probably the best athlete in that class.
There are some very good freshman contributing at the varsity level or excelling at the jv level throughout the area who could be as good as any of the three mentioned above. Let’s not forget that they are freshman and as Al McGuire said “the best thing about a freshman is that they becomes a sophomore”

Also forgot one great bit of info, with one more win Jamestown coach Ben Drake will tie the all time coaching win record at Jamestown with 250 wins. Drake will tie Rolland Taft (1937-1957) and will have an overall record of 250-76 since 1998.

Finally I agree, Olmstead would beat Falls by 5 or 6 at least. If Olmstead had a better coach who would play his star player more they could win the State C title.

The referees in Jamestown are ridiculois !! Drake has them on a string, it is a 10 point advantage for them every night. If they dont give him (the A.D.,hmmmm) the game he wants, they will not be able to ref the in the gym they all want to work in down there. Watch how much closer the games are when they play up in Buffalo during the rest of the season. Refs are nonbiased in Buffalo area. Kudos to them. And the JV games, they are worse.

Try being Jamestown, where you have to play half your games out of town in Buffalo. And the referees up there never cut an out of town team like Jamestown a break, let alone call an unbiased game.

I find it hillarious how people want to complain about the officiating at jhs or any other place for that matter. U go to any high school game in American and people will complain about the officiating. And it usually is from someone who is rooting for the losing team. To say that drake gets on officials because he can pick and choose who does his games is a joke. Officials are assigned. No ad or coach has any control over it. To say that games are always closer on the road. That is across the board. Most teams are better at home where their fans are rooting for them. If u honestly think the officials give teams like Jamestown a “10 point advantage”. Takes away from the work those players and coaches put in. They win because most times they are the better team. Period. Some people are just jealous and bitter because Jamestown has dominated at the varsity and jv levels for years. Refs have nothing to do with it.

  33. guest Avatar

I respect your opinion but disagree. Sectionals have proven that fact and that takes nothing away from team they just come and play the game. drake has done a great job there, and is a great guy for kids. He took Paige into his house and presently has kellam living with him trying to help these kids. But the refs ugghhhh. Happy Holidays

Agree with guest with a capital G. Many officials are just bad officials, and even more fan’s react poorly, to perceived officiating blunders and focus thier ire on the home team’s coach for bullying his way to more favorable calls.
As earlier stated by Guest, officials are assigned. And on a night with a full slate of games the best of the officials are not available to everyone.
If you want your team to win tough games on the road they should score MORE POINTS.
