As a pollster for the Buffalo News, I'm asked to send in my weekly ballots ranking the top ten large and small schools. The polls are based on games played through Sunday of each week. Here's a look at how I see them and some of the rationale used to get there.
Large Schools
1. Canisius (MMA) – Business-like in disposing of Webster Schroeder on Saturday. A higher ranked Section V Class AA team, Aquinas, visits Tuesday, and there's no reason the Crusaders shouldn't handle them. The week ends with Cathedral Prep coming in on Saturday afternoon, always a diffficult opponent.
** Poll Disclaimer: Until this week, I had been sticking very close to the results, which had St. Joe's ahead of McKinley, who beat Timon, who beat North, etc.. However with McKinley dropping two straight and after watching Jamestown again this weekend, I could no longer stay with Macks ahead of North, who beat Jamestown, so McKinley stays ahead of Jamestown. You follow me? So when I got to the line, I called a complete audible. Here it is:
2. Williamsville North (AA) – Was so impressed with the team's performance at Clarence two weeks ago that I left feeling like they were the best team in Class AA. The Spartans first two losses came within two weeks of their football team losing in the state championship game, and I think they are a different team right now. We'll find out really soon – Section VI playoff brackets are finalized in less than two weeks.
3. Clarence (AA) – I kept them behind Jamestown last week after splitting with the Red Raiders, but I'm giving them the bump this week after handling Frontier on Friday night, then doing the same to McKinley just 13 hours later. The Red Devils own wins over four top 10 large schools, and beat Iroquois by nearly 40 points.
4. Jamestown (AA) – A very impressive outing at Rochester's East High in the nightcap of Saturday's RAP Classic. A 32-point performance by Zack Panebianco and an overtime win with Quinn Lee Yaw fouled out on the bench during the extra session.
5. St. Joe's (MMA) – This weekend's results take a little of the luster off of the win over McKinley, and coupled with the closer than expected results against Cardinal O'Hara, Niagara Catholic, and St. Francis recently, I moved the ECIC I brass ahead of the Marauders.
6. Timon/St. Jude (MMA) – The Tigers get a chance to avenge a loss earlier this season and move ahead of St. Joe's when they visit there on Wednesday night. But first, they'll look to do the same with Olean, who makes its way into South Buffalo tonight. See you there.
7. Lockport (AA) – Used a big second half to put the Jacks away and earn a season sweep over North Tonawanda. Just three NFL wins away from a league title, including Lew-Port & Niagara Falls this week.
8. McKinley (A1) – After breaking the Yale Cup winning streak record at Hutch-Tech this week with a 33rd straight league win, it came to a screeching halt at Middle College on Friday night. The Macks can still earn a share of a third straight Yale Cup crown though, something that begins with taking the rematch with the Kats on Wednesday.
9. Amherst (A2) – After winning 24 straight in ECIC III, the Tigers fell at home to Cheektowaga and slip back one spot here. The rematch is this Wednesday night.
10. Kenmore West (AA) – An impressive win against Lew-Port last week means only winning a pair against Niagara Falls stands in their way of a share of the NFL title.
Small Schools
1. Olean (B1) – The Huskies were impressive even in a loss, as they went at it with Greece Athena on Saturday night. Two more rematches this week, beginning tonight at Timon before hosting Bishop Kearney on Friday.
2. Middle College (C1) – After two months of debating whether East or McKinley would win the Yale Cup, it's the Kats who are alone in first place in the city. They play both again this week and we'll find out if they can repeat those results on the road.
3. St. Mary's (MMA) – After beating every small school in the MMA, the Lancers will look to do it for a second time this week.
4. Park (MMA) – The Pioneers look to keep winning this week with games against Walsh, Niagara Catholic, and Cardinal O'Hara, to set up a big rematch with St. Mary's next week.
5. East (B2) – After starting out 7-0, the Panthers are just 3-3 in their last six games. They host first place Middle College this Friday and need to win for a chance at the Yale Cup.
6. Nichols (MMA) – The Vikings get their fill of Saints this week: Joe's, Francis, & Mary's all on tap.
7. Fredonia (B1) – The Hillbillies can lock up CCAA I West against Maple Grove tonight and finish unbeaten with a win at Silver Creek this Friday.
8. Barker (C1) – After Jake Haight broke the school's scoring record, this historic season for the Raiders has them winning a league title for the first time since 1978 when they played against the Genesee region
9. Cleveland Hill (B2) – Since jumping on to this ballot, the Golden Eagles validated it with a pair of 27 point wins against Alden.
10. Sherman (D) – After dropping their first game at Randolph, the Wildcats won their next two games by 25 points each.
