** According to the rankings…
– Consistent inconsistency is something to strive for. Last week, Fairport (Section V) was all the way up to the #6 spot in NYS Class AA. I could speculate as to how that ever happened in the first place, but instead I'll just say that there was never any chance Fairport was even the best team Section V, much less a top six team in NYS Class AA. They ended up losing to Aquinas last week who had been #9, at home by double figures. They follow that up by collapsing against unranked Edison Tech over the weekend. That's two losses to Class AA teams from its own section in four days. The result – Fairport stays in the state rankings, the top 20 even. Remember, Tapestry dropped five spots last week for winning. Remember, Section VI has no teams ranked in Class AA (not even Falls). Remember, you drop spots in the poll for losing to the top team in a higher classification than you're in (Class B St. Mary's fell two spots for losing to Class A #1 Park after smashing Class B & state ranked Health Sciences two days earlier).
– Defending Class D State Champion Bridgehampton lost to Class C #1 Stony Brook, and fell one spot because of it. This makes no sense to me, as I think it should be viewed as an expected loss – certainly not a bad loss. I didn't think St. Mary's should drop for losing to Park for the same reason. But in the name of being consistently inconsistent, the same Stony Brook team lost to #16 St. Anthony of Class A, and retained the #1 spot in Class C. Wait, so it's OK to lose to #16 in Class A if you're #1 in Class C, but…..
– When Walsh, #6 in NYS Class B lost to NYS Class A #1 Park, they fall three spots to #9. Consistently inconsistent!
– How about this one – Chautauqua Lake makes an appearance in the Class C state rankings last week, but got bounced right back out for losing to Class B #1 Olean. C'mon Chautauqua Lake, did you guys really think you'd get the Fairport treatment? You would need to lose games you had a much better chance of winning to get the Fairport treatment.
– Besides Tapestry & Chautauqua Lake, Cleveland Hill is the latest Section VI Class C team that the state panel views as better than East. Cleveland Hill debuts in the Class C state rankings this week at #20, while East continues to get snubbed.
– East Rochester and Northstar Christian are ranked #2 & #3 respectively in NYS Class C. Middle College is ranked #8. Raise your hand if you think Section V has two teams better than our best team in Class C. The last time Section V beat Section VI in the Class C regionals was 2009. Enjoy that inflated state ranking, reality check comes in March.
– McKinley's loss to Canisius knocked them down nine spots in Class A, from #15 to #24.
– Tapestry fell five spots in NYS Class B for losing to Cardinal O'Hara. Win or lose, Tapestry falls five spots per week.
– Franklinville dropped nine spots in NYS Class D after losing to Pine Valley at the buzzer.
– Fredonia dropped out of the rankings in Class B following its home loss to Southwestern.
