All-Centercourt honors the Top 60 seasons

The time has finally come where I ask area high school hoops fans for their opinion before giving mine.  Who has earned a spot on the 2017 All-Centercourt Team???  Give it shot. Five teams, with five players on each team, and another 35 players for honorable mention.

In a few weeks, the 10th Annual All-Centercourt Team will be announced, honoring the top 60 seasons turned in by WNY high school players this year.  The selections are broken down into a first, second, third, fourth, & fifth team, with five players on each, along with 35 honorable mention selections.  There is also an award for the CC MVP (the WNY Player of the Year), Coach of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year, All-Centercourt Defenders, and the Centercourt #BOOM Squad.

The top 60 may sound like a lot, but when you start putting names down on paper, the list fills quickly and inevitably some very good players get left off the list.  The main criteria I focus on is the 2017 season, not what you did in the past, and not where you're going in the future…it's all about honoring the top 60 from this season.

Use the comments section below to tell us what your 5 teams would look like and maybe even why.  If you're really ambitious, try coming up with the entire team including the HM selections.

Please keep all commentary appropriate when discussing high school athletes, and remember, it is lame to say someone does not belong on a team, without offering up who should be on one.  It might be even more lame to give only one or two teams.  Show us you've paid attention this season and provide all five teams.

CC please don’t leave out the MMA players on your list. Your playoff coverage was well done but it was lacking for the MMA tournament. Don’t forget the kids on Canisius and St Francis or the kids on St Mary’s and Nichols. There is no way those teams get to the finals with only one of the top 60 or 95 players in WNY. Canisius and St Marys had some of the best big players and St Francis and Nichols had two of the best guard tandums in WNY. These teams don’t get where they are without these players. Looking forward to your well researched list. Fun to follow.

Some small school talent from the southern tier to be considered: seniors Cordell O’Brien from Frewsburg and Chris Robson from Sherman, co MVP’s Div. 2 West, Both over 1000 career points; Tyler Hind, Randolph freshman, team leading scorer, class C2 tournament MVP and CCAA EAST1 co-MVP; Franklinville junior Sam Erickson, helped lead them to sectional championship; and Chautauqua Lake junior Devon Pope, team leader and one of section 6’s leading scorers

WNY scout leaves Devin Pope completely off his list. Only player in the area to score over 700 points this year and will most likely reach 2000 next year. A little ridiculous I would say…

WNY Scout has 10 kids from MMA in the top 15. Don’t agree with that.Timon has three and lost in 1st round to Canisius. Shakur Harris should be higher based on what I seen of him at BS. He also was 48 % for 3’s on the year. The Wiley kid from Will South should be on the list. Greg didn’t beat all those MMA teams on his own. Want to give a shout out to my son’s, Dan & Dylan Anderson from OP. Proud of both of you.

Saw a lot of games this year. Tried to be fair public vs. private but couldn’t evade the fact that MMA play was on a higher level than most leagues in this area. Canisius deserves a lot of credit for taking the MMA with the year they had. S park had an outstanding year led by shakur and will south did well in season but disappointed when it mattered. Dom is deserving of POY even without the points he scored the kid can ball.

Not enough love for the MMA on here. Canisius, St Marys and Nichols are all teams that are being under appreciated. Put Wheatfield, Grand Island or NT in the MMA and they struggle big time. In the A or the B. Therefore the players on these three teams should be recognized. Johnson, MacDonald, Bradley, Cielski, Szablewski, Brown, Johnson, Banasak and Harvy carried these three teams through MMA playoffs. The most talented league in WNY.
Some of these teams represented on here unfortunately would not do well against these teams due to the PLAYERS on these teams. No need to have fair representation amongst leagues. Players are players no matter where they go to school. Also, the only players that are being chattered about on here are the ones who score the most points. Your rebounders and your point guards do the dirty work. With out these two pieces teams struggle. Case and point – Cheektowaga. Good Luck CC. Tough job ahead of you. Pick players who are players no matter where they go to school.

The small schools of the MMA are not better than the ECIC or NFL teams they are weak actually …After the top 3 the MMA is sub-par stop with with the love got MMA.

  38. Old Coach Avatar
    Old Coach

Coach Monte – you are right on… those players are deserving… I must saythat winning a championship is way more valuable than being listed on an all star team… most kids would never trade the memory of winning a title over being listed… in most cases the championship is all that matters

  39. Itellthetruth Avatar
    Itellthetruth

The small school MMA schools lose to the top teams by 30 and 40 points ,as in every league there are tough teams and weak teams this MMA supremecy is not true after the top 3 teams the league is average to weak .if you don’t think a falls, NT , Ken West , Lockport, Amherst , will South type teams would compete in MMA you are way off .

  40. Coach Monte Avatar
    Coach Monte

Naaah, Itellthetruth is confused and obviously not an MMA fan, actually not a real good judge of good basketball…..Not sure those were the type teams I listed… maybe you should read the text closer… the A teams in MMA and the top two B MMA schools would compete in ECIC and NFL any day, if not win the league most years. Those middle of the road ECIC and NFL schools, which there are a lot of this year, would never compete. Not enough talent.

  41. Coach Monte Avatar
    Coach Monte

Especially NFL… they are undisciplined and MMA coaches would out coach them along with their better talent.

  42. Itellthetruth Avatar
    Itellthetruth

Neither did the two teams you listed Nichols and St. Marys.
Nichols losses include losing by 40 to Park, 30 to frannies, and a loss to Maryvale.
St. Marys lost to Cheektowaga by 20, Ohara by 20, Canisius by 40, Park by 40, Timon by 25 , frannies by 20. But I guess thats competing lol. Oh and the kicker to NT by 12 a team you mentioned would not compete. Grand Island, NT would easily compete in the MMA. NW was horrible this year thats like me mentioning CCA.
I love the top divsion in the MMA , but as I said after the top 3 its weak. Just like the top NFL teams would beat up on MMA Bs in most games and ECIC teams would do the same .

This was a down year for the public schools in WNY. From top to bottom, the MMA in Class A was so much better than Section 6. The worst team in Class A, St. Joe’s, owned 5 or 6 wins over Section 6 teams. With the exception of Williamsville South, no other Section 6 team could compete with the MMA.
Timon beat Amherst by 19 points AT Amherst, they beat Health Sciences by 16 and they beat Olean by 10 AT Olean. St. Francis beat Health Sciences by 12 and they beat Ken West by 17. Canisius beat Jamestown by 14. Park beat Niagara Falls, East, Cheektowaga and Will South. Even St. Mary’s took care of its neighbor, Lancaster. All of the above public school teams won a sectional title or at least made it to the Semi-Finals in their respective class.
So with the exception of Will South, the MMA absolutely took care of business this year against their section 6 opponents.
A big problem with the public schools is the lack of good teams in the highest class. Jamestown and Niagara Falls have dominated Class AA for the last decade and with the exception of a couple Panebianco Jamestown teams, Rochester has dominated ‘AA’. And it’s not just one Rochester ‘AA’ school. Greece-Athena, East High, Aquinas, Bishop Kearney, and Fairport have all taken their turns slapping Section 6 around. Class ‘AA’ in WNY is better off with a couple city teams in the class but with the emergence of Charter Schools, I doubt this will happen anytime soon.

What I think is a fair mix between Public and private schools from WNY this season based on individual stats and The school they played for this seasons records
