The second set of state rankings for the 2023 the season have been released by the NYSSWA. Below are the WNY teams that made the cut:
Class AA
Jamestown #16
Niagara Falls #23
Class A
Amherst #9
St. Joe's #21
Canisius #22
Class B
Timon #2
Allegany-Limestone #5
Nichols #11
Salamanca #18
Lew-Port #22
Depew #24
Class C
Randolph #4
Holland #10
Class D
Panama #10
Clymer #15
According to the rankings…
– We will get that farewell Section VI Class AA Final between Jamestown & Falls this season before a sixth classification is added and Falls goes up to Class AAA next season. Both squads moved up three spots in the rankings this week, with Falls being an official Top 25 team now, instead of a "magically" ranked team…who ranks 30 teams instead of a Top 25?
– Allegany-Limestone vs Salamanca in the Section VI Class B2 Final is the real overall Section VI Class B Final, with no team from Class B1 ranked ahead of the two Class B2 powers from the Southern Tier.
– The Southern Tier still has the best public school in 4 out of 5 WNY classifications — there are no Class A teams in the Southern Tier from Section VI.
– Randolph went from winning a state championship last week, to not even reaching Glens Falls, as Lyons (Section V) slides one spot ahead of them. Randolph dropped from #1 to #4 because of a loss at Allegany-Limestone, the team ranked #5 in NYS Class B. Does the NYSSWA expect the #1 team in NYS Class C to be better than the #5 team in NYS Class B? I'll hang up and listen.
– The Section VI Class D Final at JCC is now between Panama and Clymer after Westfield dropped from the NYS Class D rankings. Although, if it were a Top 25, they'd likely still be ranked (NYSSWA only ranks 15 teams in Class D) and would definitely make the cut it was a Magical Top 30.
