Recapping the Spartans big win

Sorry I wasn't able to get anything up about this earlier.

The Williamsville North win over Jamestown was definitely the type of classic that deserves its own post, so here are some of the highlights.

The Red Raiders jumped out early 8-0, and looked like they wouldn't miss a beat without Jaysean Paige in the lineup.  After North cut the lead to 12-7, Jamestown got a pair of baskets, the second being a 3-pointer from Adam Cecchini, to extend its lead to 18-7.  The Spartans switched to a 2-3 zone after that and went on a 9-0 run, seven of which came from freshman Sterling Taplin, who capped off the run with a sick crossover and drive that resulted in a three-point play.

Jamestown lead 21-16 after the first quarter.

North scored the first six points of the second quarter to take its first lead of the game, 22-21.  Darin Butts responded with the next two buckets, making it 25-22 Jamestown.  Taplin then connected on back-to-back bombs from downtown, stole the ball and fed teammate Jonathan Safir, who was fouled and converted a pair from the line to put the Spartans up 30-25.

Williamsville North lead 36-31 at halftime, thanks to 19 points from Taplin.

The Spartans never trailed in the third quarter and lead by as many as 10 points on two occasions.  Taplin scored another nine points in the quarter, while the Red Raiders got a combined 14 points from the Campion brothers, Joey and Tommy.

Williamsville North lead 55-49 after three.

In the fourth quarter, Jamestown twice closed to within a point, 59-58 and 61-60, but each time the  Spartans responded.  Trailing by five with under two minutes remaining, Butts converted a three-point play.  After a score from North's Edwin Young, Butts made it a two-point game with 50 ticks left on the clock.  On its last possesion, Jamestown missed a 3-pointer and a putback, but with 1.8 seconds left, Chris Carlson scored to send the game to overtime.  It was the first time the game had been tied since it was 25 apiece at the 4:08 mark of the second quarter.

At the end of regulation, the score was 67-67.

After being held scoreless in the fourth quarter, Taplin scored his team's first six points in OT and the Spartans built a six-point lead with just over a minute remaining.  Farhan Hussain put an exclamation point on the win for North with a break away dunk in the final moments.

Final Score in overtime: Williamsville North 79, Jamestown 75

Taplin finished with 34 points, Young scored 14 points, and Safir added 11.  Hussain grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked five shots.

Butts led Jamestown with 25 points and seven assists.  Joey Campion scored 18 points, while Tommy Campion contributed 12 points.

Where do you see North moving up (or into in this case) in your rankings with this win?

That will depend on how the Spartans fare at Clarence tomorrow and in the rematch with Jamestown on Saturday.
Where do you think they should be ranked?

Probably 7th or 8th. There is no way after seeing that game monday night that Riverside, Cheektowaga, or Maryvale could play with them. Then I think their resume is stronger than that of Bennett, Lancaster, and McKinley.

Riverside could hang with North strictly due to their athletic ability. Their resume may be stronger than Lancaster, except that they were defeated by them.

While we can all agree that Paige’s not playing should not be held against North it still is an obvious factor. Jamestown playing them to ot without their leading scorer and on the road. That is a credit to the depth and the leadership of seniors Campion and Butts. If North losses at Jamestown where they still may be without Paige, and Jamestown sweeps the weekend then I think we are right back where we were at the beginning of the week. With that said, Taplin is as special a talent as has been in this league since Maceo Wofford and in the playoffs he can win games by himself. ECIC 1 has had a tremendous 12 months, from Clarence’s upset of Falls last playoffs through a great run this year. We will see if the league can have another great playoff run this year

I agree Hollywood…that’s why I am hoping KW draws North in the sectionals and not McKinley.
BTW….I have all the sectional scenarios worked out for AA if anyone is interested. I’m working on A this afternoon.

Alright….it’s still fairly detailed even though there is only a week left.
Right now the Falls have jumped Jamestown due to the loss at North, but if Jamestown wins out(they have four left…home to OP, North and Clarence and away to WSW), they will still get the top seed even if the Falls goes 14-0 by a difference of 4.583 to 4.571. However, if North again beats Jamestown on Saturday and they proceed to win out, both teams would finish at 10-2, with North getting the #2 by virtue of head to head. Even if North loses one of their last three, they are assured at least a #3 seed as long as they finish no worse than 9-3.
In terms of McKinley, if they win out and finish 12-2, they will be no worse than a #4 seed, as their max possible power points are 3.429. However, if they drop one of their remaining three, they would finish at 11-3 and have 3.143. In that case, Ken West could jump them for the #4 seed assuming they beat NT and KE to finish 10-4 and would have 3.214. Clarence, currently at 6-4, has North and Jamestown remaining…if they drop both, they would finish with a 2.500 rating and likely fall to the 8/9 matchup. If they pull off an upset and finish 7-5, they would have a 2.917 rating and be no worse than #7 seed.
The real wild card right now is Lancaster….currently they are 5-4, they have their final three games on the road but they are all very winnable…Frontier, OP and WSW. If they win out, they would have a 3.333 rating and possibly be the #4 seed depending on McKinley, but would be no worse than a #5 seed, thus bumping KW or McKinley to a #6 seed. In any event, if Lancaster drops one of the three, they will still finish with a 2.917 rating and do no worse than a #7, as N-W can do no better than a 2.857 rating even if they win out and finish 9-5.
N-W is almost assuredly locked into either the #7 or #8 seed, just as Lockport is nearly a lock for the #9 seed as it is nearly impossible for Frontier or OP to pass them. The #10 and #11 seeds will very likely be Frontier and OP in some order, while WSW will be the #12 and NT #13 unless NT pulls off an upset of wither KW or N-W.
I think I covered everything….if there are still questions, let me know. I’ll try to put up the A-1/A-2 scenarios tonight and the B, c and D tomorrow.
