Sorry I wasn't able to get anything up about this earlier.
The Williamsville North win over Jamestown was definitely the type of classic that deserves its own post, so here are some of the highlights.
The Red Raiders jumped out early 8-0, and looked like they wouldn't miss a beat without Jaysean Paige in the lineup. After North cut the lead to 12-7, Jamestown got a pair of baskets, the second being a 3-pointer from Adam Cecchini, to extend its lead to 18-7. The Spartans switched to a 2-3 zone after that and went on a 9-0 run, seven of which came from freshman Sterling Taplin, who capped off the run with a sick crossover and drive that resulted in a three-point play.
Jamestown lead 21-16 after the first quarter.
North scored the first six points of the second quarter to take its first lead of the game, 22-21. Darin Butts responded with the next two buckets, making it 25-22 Jamestown. Taplin then connected on back-to-back bombs from downtown, stole the ball and fed teammate Jonathan Safir, who was fouled and converted a pair from the line to put the Spartans up 30-25.
Williamsville North lead 36-31 at halftime, thanks to 19 points from Taplin.
The Spartans never trailed in the third quarter and lead by as many as 10 points on two occasions. Taplin scored another nine points in the quarter, while the Red Raiders got a combined 14 points from the Campion brothers, Joey and Tommy.
Williamsville North lead 55-49 after three.
In the fourth quarter, Jamestown twice closed to within a point, 59-58 and 61-60, but each time the Spartans responded. Trailing by five with under two minutes remaining, Butts converted a three-point play. After a score from North's Edwin Young, Butts made it a two-point game with 50 ticks left on the clock. On its last possesion, Jamestown missed a 3-pointer and a putback, but with 1.8 seconds left, Chris Carlson scored to send the game to overtime. It was the first time the game had been tied since it was 25 apiece at the 4:08 mark of the second quarter.
At the end of regulation, the score was 67-67.
After being held scoreless in the fourth quarter, Taplin scored his team's first six points in OT and the Spartans built a six-point lead with just over a minute remaining. Farhan Hussain put an exclamation point on the win for North with a break away dunk in the final moments.
Final Score in overtime: Williamsville North 79, Jamestown 75
Taplin finished with 34 points, Young scored 14 points, and Safir added 11. Hussain grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked five shots.
Butts led Jamestown with 25 points and seven assists. Joey Campion scored 18 points, while Tommy Campion contributed 12 points.
