Jaysean Paige leaves Jamestown

After leading the Red Raiders to the New York State Class AA championship game last season and garnering WNY Player of the Year honors from both the Buffalo News and this site, Jaysean Paige has transferred out of Jamestown.  The 6-1 senior who dazzled fans last season with an array of 3-pointers, hanging jumpers, and monster dunks, is currently enrolled at Perry County Central High School located in Hazard, Kentucky.

Paige, who transferred to Jamestown prior to the start of his sophomore year, averaged 26.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game for the Red Raiders as a junior last season.  He also shot an incredible 58% from the field, while throwing down over 50 slams in 24 games.

According to reports, his eligibility to play basketball for the Perry County Central Commodores is pending an official decision from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

There’s a James Ewing, 6-6, 240 pounds, listed on the roster at University of Toledo. Says he’s a sophomore via Cardinal O’Hara and IMG Academy in Florida. No bio or photo on the UT website which means he’s new there.

WOW, James Ewing is that big now! Definately going to check Toledo’s roster in the weeks to come. Where did last years 1st team ALL WNY seniors go? I know Nevins was considering Utica College.

I spoke to a source in Kentucky and am told that Jaysean Paige has been ruled ineligible to play by the KHSAA ,and an appeal is now underway and is scheduled for November 1.
The appeal could overturn the decision but as of now, Paige has been ruled ineligible to play at Hazard.

Didnt mean to offend you Jake but they are a long way from contending in MM and I just thought if this was KW year they would want the most competition they could get seeing they only get 4 non leaguers. Nichols supposedly has a great frosh class but rumor is 2 are planning on leaving after this yr

Mr. Moran Paige is no longer a western new yorker having deserted coach drake. We shoul ignore him and concentrate on wny’ers!

Without knowing enough details to elaborate more in the story, the only thing I can say that is the ineligibility with Paige in Kentucky right now at least in part has to do with custody issues which the person I spoke with says they plan on having ironed out by the appeal hearing on November 1. To elaborate on your point, Sam, I am extremely dissapointed that he left not just as a fan of watching talent, but because I have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Drake and by all accounts I’ve heard, he was “done wrong” by all this.

There are so many talented young men in wny that have good grades great work ethics are great community representatives. That have the whole package would like to see them get more news time.

I don’t know much about Jaysean Paige but it seems to me that Coach Drake did awful alot to help to kid out. It seems like he comes from a disfunctual home life. But saying he was “done wrong” by this gives me the impression that Coach Drake might have been helping Jaysean to keep him on the team.

Tyler Funk from Clarence listed on Canisius College’s roster. Looks like he walked on, since he wasn’t listed as being signed in the Griffs’ 2011 recruiting class.

Sam Moore (Sr.) and Alex Moore (So.) from Olean, and formerly of Pitt-Bradford (DIII) are on the roster at Edinboro University (DII). They landed there after their father, Andy Moore, was ousted as head coach at Pitt-Bradford.
Jake Houseknecht (redshirt junior) from Olean is on scholarship at St. Bonaventure but has been way down on the bench.

Yea…Funk was planning on walking onto Canisius all along. Good decision to let academics take the lead and let basketball follow. However, as I said last year, I think Tyler has the most potential out of any senior last year at the D-1 level. He has a good inside-outside game and at his 6’7 size, could translate into some good minutes in a year or two. He is very coach-able and improved every year, so I’m sure he will find a role on the team in time.

Should Paige return to Jamestown, as a student he cannot be denied the opportunity to tryout and become a member of the basketball team.
Will Coach Drake “turn the page”(no pun intended) and put him on the floor to lead the team? We will all just have to wait for that outcome.
    Isn’t speculation wonderful?

  26. Patrick Moran Avatar

Clearly, I don’t have insight as to what will happen with the Kentucky appeal, but from what I’ve been gathering by talking to a reporter or two from Perry County, it appears the issue Paige had to resolve for this appeal is custody-related, which to my understanding he has. I could be wrong and purely from enjoying HS Hoops here, I selfishly would love to see Paige back at Jamestown, but I feel pretty confident his ruling in Kentucky will get overturned and even if by some chance it doesn’t, I still am not sure he’d come back and play for Jamestown. I’ll try and get an update on the appeal and post info here.

What kind of eligibility requirements does Jamestown have? If you are the starting QB on the football team and get caught drinking you get 2 weeks suspension because the team needed you to win a game to get you to the stadium. I guess only a 10-3 win over Lockport shortened that suspension. Most schools that would ended his season. How are Jaysean grades in Kentucky? Has he been going to school? Will he get a “fresh” start when he returns?

  28. WNYHOOPS Avatar
    WNYHOOPS

Dennis Drew was caught at a party where there was alcohol. The Jamestown School District policy is a 3 game suspension, and it can be reduced to a 2 game suspension with community service. MOST SCHOOLS turn a blind eye to things like this, esp. to star athletes that could jeopardize a season.
Don’t try and insinuate things if you don’t what your talking about…

Dark LMT , I would say your way off, Drake is AD and anybody that knows Ben knows he is a straight shooter and doesn’t put sports ahead of kids. WNYHOOPS, i disagree with you also as I think the majority of schools do the right thing. Just my opinions

ESPN pre season state rankings have AQ at # 8 and CHS on the bubble of the top ten. Those two meet at CHS on 12/17 for the first premier game of the season. It appears season expectations very high this year on Delaware Ave.

The game before Canisius plays Aquinas they play Kenmore West. Ken West has a monster first four games: Canisius, Lockport, the Falls, then Sweet Home.

I’m pretty sure Timon and Niagara Falls meet right off the bat as well; plenty of good games in December this year.
BTW, waiting for an official word regarding Paige’s appeal hearing.

  33. Patrick Moran Avatar

    Here’s an update regarding Paige.
I spoke to someone from Kentucky tied into the case. Jaysean had his appeal yesterday (Tuesday), but it was for informational purposes. Now that the judge has it, he will review everything and from what I am told, a decision could take up to 7-10 days.
So no official word on his status yet. I’ve heard rumors that he’s already won his case, and others that he lost his case.. AS of right now, neither is true.

FWIW my 2 cents, a shame Paige left under the circumstances he did. A big loss for the Red Raiders. Perhaps it will give other ECIC ! teams a chance.
1st teamers this year, Taplin, Agbeko and Wier for sure. Will be interesting to see which of the Crusaders step up to garner one or more spots.
And it looks like MIG was wrong again! No surprise there!! 🙂 Neither Taplin nor Wier ended up on Delaware Ave.

Hop star I think some players from niagara falls and timon and other schools would disagree with you .when all elite players from why played together who were team leaders when playing against other top players. Empire state games or can am games.any of the top 20 why players can look good playing weaker players but how do they look against equal top level players.

  37. hoopster Avatar

Couldn’t agree more RM! You darn well better believe in yourself if you’re going to have any chance of coming anywhere near your best or reaching your potential. Also certainly can see where Jermaine Crumpton may well secure one of the 1st teams spots.
Also couldn’t agree more about the value of competition. That’s one of the reasons hs football is the poor step-child of WNY hoops. OP is always beating up on their poor step-sisters in the ECIC. Sure would be nice to see them especially since they’re on the top of the heap most every year challenge themselves by playing top MMA, out-of-area or out-of-state teams. Fortunately we don’t have that problem in hs hoops. Every player, team and coach wants to play the toughest competition they can. It’s one of the reasons why hoops is on such a higher plane than football.
As for competition, perhaps the best game I have ever seen by a local player against top-shelf competition was two years ago. Stan Wier absolutely destroyed Long Island Lutheran’s Achraf Yacoubou in the federation final. He scored 31 and held Yacoubou, last year’s NYS Mr. Basketball and current Villanova freshman, to 11, 4 of which came in the waning moments and long after the game had been decided.
In any event, it’s the start of a new year. Everyone has a fresh start and believes they will be league/sectional/state champs. That’s the beauty of it all!!

    Dark TML…good one.
To be honest, I’m not quite sure which way to lean on Canisius. All the talk has been about their great summer, but they still did lose two of their top players so I’m going to have to see them on the court before putting them at the top. It looks like they are playing OTC in the Pastor and then have McQuaid before the KW and AQ games. Those should be pretty fair barometers. They also have East High of Roch. and Cath. Prep and the G’town Prep tourney.
Convenient scheduling has also put the two games against Joe’s in nice spots…first is Friday 1/27(KW/NF is the day before) and the second is Sat 2/18(day of the seeding meeting).

Hoopster, you have a chance to be correct on your 3 locks for 1st team All WNY but given McPreptalks history, 1st team is difficult to achieve if you don’t win your leagues championship. St. Joe’s only returning starter is Reggie, should Kelly decide not to play hoops, so their will be some big holes to fill with inexperienced players. Both Canisius and Timon return starters who contributed greatly last season and will prove difficult to beat by a young team like St. Joe’s.
Taplin is simply the best point guard in WNY. Stan has unparrelled physical strength and maturity and will put up big offensive #’s. Same argument applies though, will falling short of winning a league championship be enough to be 1st team. Maybe 1, perhaps 2 but no way will 3 players receive that honor. Look to Canisius for 1 spot as they have 3 serious canidates in Hart, Adam Weir, and White and look poised to repeat with the depth they have. Crumpton will be interesting to follow now that he has verbally commited to Canisius College. Not selecting someone who will be playing D1 hoops will take some serious onions.
This will be a very entertaining season to follow. Other than Taplin and Agbeko will any other D1 prospects emerge?

RM! My feelings are hurt! 🙂 I agreed with you, but no reciprocity. JK my friend.
    KK some excellent points. Kudos!!!
One of the things Keith looks at in addition to team success is the talent of the individual player. I got a call from an ACC assistant just a couple weeks ago about Sterllng. They are interested and are going to check him out further. Also talked to another college assistant who said Sterling was at their prospect camp. He said Sterling was among the best players at the camp. This is a national program. They had some of the very best prospects from around the country at the camp.
There are no such thing as locks of course, just one man’s opinion. Like you very much looking forward to the season. Always fun! Now if we can only get CC off his duff and back to work. C’mon CC your legion of fans are clamoring for your work. The season can’t begin without it!!

And for anyone looking to feed their hoops appetite, come on out Friday night and support the UB Bulls in their home opener against St. Peter’s. They have four senior starters returning as well as freshman phenom Javon McCrea. South fans will remember him. McCrea was freshman player of the year in the MAC and is a pre-season 1st team East selection. Several media publications have tabbed him as one of the top 100 players in the country and one had him their top 30 nationwide.
Hopes are high at Alumni Arena. The key to the season may end up being the quality of the guard play.
And another reason to support them is local product Dave Barnett. Dave was a walk-on and has become an integral part of the team. He’s projected as a starter.

  45. TML1000 Avatar

I’ve got my UB season’s, hoopster. Do you think Reggie will still give the starting nod to Titus? There’s been a lot of clamoring regarding that issue. You’re right though, the guard play will be the key between a potentially title winning season and another season in the middle of the pack. Hopefully Oldham or Watson will step as a true ball handler and leader in the back court. The front court is right up there with the best in the MAC…good experience and youth. I’m excited about what Ford can bring to the table…a dimension usually not seen at UB.
With Will already at the program, he should have a seemless transition onto the court next year and I think Stan should be able to step right into the Filzen role while being a stronger overall player.

  46. hoopster Avatar
    hoopster

Me too TML. Between me, a buddy and my brother we’ve got 8 seats.
Not sure with the way Reggie subs that it makes a huge difference, but pretty sure Javon starts. Reggie it seems likes to have someone on the bench who can come in and inject some life into the team if they’re not performing or perhaps to spark the team to a higher level of performance. Regardless Titus will still play a prominent and vital role.
Watson is injured. Just had some surgery. Think he’ll be out for another 3-5 weeks. They’ll need his shooting eye and can’t return soon enough. I like Stan. He’s a tough kid who adds a nice physical dimension to the team. As far as Will, despite my bold projections below, nothing is guaranteed. You gotta earn it. Plus by the time he suits up next year he will not have played a whole lot of meaningful ball in two years. Hopefully he uses his transfer year wisely to improve and get better.

As you can see just one more reason for people to get out and support the Bulls. Having hosted him at the house a couple times, I can only add that he is a polite and fine young man.
