Class D Championship – Pine Valley 57, Clymer 53

The Panthers got 21 points from Jason Howard, including five 3-pointers and a traditional three-point play, en route to a seventh sectional title since 2000.  Pine Valley never trailed Clymer for the first three quarters and led by as many as 13 points.  In the final stanza, the Pirates twice took a one-point lead, the second time with under three minutes to play.  But Howards three-point play put the Panthers back in front for good as they were able to connect on eight of nine from the charity stripe in the last two minutes to advance to the Far West Regionals in Rochester on Saturday.

Brendan Bentham and Ed Barnes each scored 10 points for Pine Valley.  Junior Adam Walker led Clymer with 20 points, while sophomore Dan Lictus added 11 points.

M.I.G., Wayne is not an idiot, He is just looking for a fight.
Wayne, Those players mention by M.I.G. are/were at D1 schools no matter how they got there. Basketball is a global sport so schools can go anywhere in the world (not directed at you Jack) to find players.
CC, congrats on a fantastic forum I “CAN’T WAIT for this record to be broken when we start the all WNY team discussions.

Rooney – Uhh, I don’t get your Jonny Flynn comment, he was a MacDonald’s All-American. Mallon was not a bench player as he started just about every game his Junior and Senior years at St. Joe’s. McLimans is only Sophmore at a school within a power conference. Regan is only a Freshman at a school within a power conference. Hayward may have went to a prep school before Marquette but he’s still from WNY where he played most of his career and still ended up at a big time school.
What do you want? An Oak Hill Academy type school whose sole purpose is to produce Division 1 basketball players? For the size that WNY is, I think they get a lot of Division 1 recognition.

So what’s going to happen with this site in the summer? Maybe CC can rent it out to max preps as a recruiting forum.

    Some things never change hoopster.
I think many players get overlooked by D1 schools that could play at some level of D1. There isn’t much difference between top D3 players and low-mid level D1s. Many choose the D3 route as a way to compete on a National level at some of the better D3 schools.
30-35 years ago(yeah back when I played) there was much more intermingling of levels. At a D3 school, I played almost half of my games against D1s.
I think we at times should just forget about comparing where our kids go play college ball and enjoy the competition each and every year. Its pretty good.

That’s right Jack, a lot of D1 schools are looking for the 6’9″ kid who can shoot 3s and run the point. Back in the day(I played in Jacks era) no one was saying he’s going D1 or he’s going D3, All we all said was “I’m playing ball in college”. We (adults/Fan) put to much into where a kid is going to play at a high level, Let them enjoy their High school careers and see what happens next.

MiG-Why are you calling me an idiot? That is just my opinion. I hope Regan has good career at UVA. I am just making the observation that he averages 1 ppg on a team that is 8th in a really bad ACC. You don’t have to agree with my take but you don’t have to call me an idiot.

I wasn’t looking for a fight. I mean no disrespect to any WNY player who plays Division One. Any kid who gets a scholorship to play a sport in college is quite an accomplishment. My original point was that a player has a better chance of getting noticed by his summer AAU then by his HS team. Taplin and Weir playing together on all-star Canisius HS team won’t mean more than what they do over the summer. Austin Rivers, the number recruit in the US, plays on a HS team that would be nothing special without him. He got a scholarship to Duke because of his AAU summer experiences.

  14. jackherlan Avatar
    jackherlan

Wayne’s point is very well taken and has a great deal of truth to it. Times have changed and along with it NCAA recruitment policies together with conflicting schedules making it somewhat logical to do the majority of recruiting during the off-season.

Hoopster, I’m with you on the Wiers’. That’s why I originally said it would be unfair to subject them to another round of unfair criticism. My son was on the EA team with Stan and Thad.
…you have to take the blame for Jack’s botched assist. You tripped him up with your 94 count!!!

  16. Lucky13 Avatar
    Lucky13

The Prep schools are in a little bit of a different category, though, than a regular high school. Of course all of these kids play AAU and get noticed there, but there are also specific reasons for all of these elite basketball Prep schools, otherwise there wouldn’t be any.

  17. johnfrederickpsu Avatar

Whether it’s unique to the WNY area, I have no idea, but just look around, there are a lot of very recognizeable high profile High School athletes that represent their respective schools very well by being 3 sport stars. Is that not what the high school experience is all about?
Playing 3 sports and not specializing in baskeball, by being fully commited to a grueling AAU schedule can be a disadvantage to a player who “fly’s under the radar” as far as college recruiting goes.
How much should a kid sacrifice in time and capital to play for a self serving AAU coach who constructs a “team” with the goal of getting one of his guy’s noticed? The high school season should be of the utmost importance. It is where leadership skills and team first attitudes are formed.
College recruiters will find player’s one way or another and WNY certainly has kids who can contribute at D1 programs, but to get kids noticed requires more than a high school coach getting on the phone and sending out video. Families need to put in a better effort on thier own. The basketball community at large with ties to D1 progams need to get the word out as well. Every little bit helps.
The talent exists in WNY. The know how, to get college coaches to come and watch is lacking. Certainly there is an advantage to specialization in basketball but I really enjoy seeing kids excell in multiple sports.

These sectionals have seen some of the most inconsistent officiating that I can remember. Tonight’s two games were particularly poor. The second game is still going on and there are over 20 fouls called in the second half. Just a shame a great game has to be ruined by over bearing refs.

Well the final HS boys basketball game 2 b played in WNY this year may have been the best of the year. Best at Buff State 4 sure. What a way 2 go out. Fisher very well could have played himself onto 1st team All WNY with the way he led his team.
Should b interesting State Quarterfinal games on Saturday. I will b at Spring Traing so I won’t b there but am taking a trip with CC tomorrow 2 check out the AA, A, and B finals at Blue Cross 2 size up the competition. I think we win C, lose D and B, AA we r a SLIGHT favorite, and A we r a SLIGHT underdog….2-3 is my guess.

Jack I enjoy our banter! So do u and Mark think AL should have fouled East when up 3 with 5 seconds left before Fisher hit that shot to send it to OT? Keep in mind East had MISSED 8 of their last 9 free throws at that point…hmm…

MIG, what kind of ? was that??????!!!!! Knowing Jack as I do, he fully expects the Marauders to win the 2011 fed chip. No matter the circumstances he always believes in his guys!!! And I think that is one of the most important things a coach can do, show belief and have confidence in his players.

Jack, I think you are selling Jamestown short.
I’ve seen Rush play this season and they are certainly no better than the Falls. They do not play with the same level of defensive intensity that either the Falls did or that Jamestown does. I also know that Irondequoit relies heavily upon their 6’8 big man, Heath. I haven’t seen him or Irondequoit this year, but I’d have to imagine Jamestown is a more athletic squad overall. I’d have Jamestown as a slight favorite against either.
I think East has at least a chance. They are definitely a team that plays up or down to their competition. We saw that against Riverside, when all they really had to do was show up to win, due to the size mismatches at every position on the floor. We also saw them up their game considerably against an extremely tough South team. I still think they can play considerably better…I know AQ is big, but House and McDaniel can really get up on the boards if they put in the work down low. If Fisher can have another very strong game and IF they can make some FT’s, I’d say they have a shot. Also, AQ still has to get by BK tonight. I know they’ve already beaten them, but BK is another BIG team.
I don’t think CV will have a shot if it plays Mynderse…a team who can actually knock down open threes. I know Charlotte is athletic and defensively minded, like Lackawanna, but am not sure on their size across the board. If Pine Valley or East Rochester win, those would be absolute shockers.

I really didn’t say anything by way of comment about Jamestown. I believe Aquinas is the most complete team, not just big, that I have seen this year. I saw Kearney 3 times and they are not likely to beat aquinas either.Kearney isn’t big but for one guy, and Aquinas has 3 guys that are almost as big. They still have to play the game, no matter what I or anyone else has to say.
